Mobil 1 is highly resistant to forming sludge.
What about lifter tick on startup of a cold engine? A speciality import (Nissan mainly) shop here used to say to run a quart of ATF through, then use 20W50 to stop the tick. And the oil filter brand usually makes no difference.Originally posted by: sixt7gt350
My Target used to carry all grades of Mobil1 for well under $4.
When they realized they had the best deal in town, they raised the price!
The 0W-20 is highly recommended to prevent wear at startup.
For anyone with a Ford 5.4 V8 and the annoying piston slap when cold, using the 0W-20 will cure it 'most every time. (It did for my wife's Expedition.)
Are you sure about this? I've been using them for a couple years because they used to mention on the package that they were partially synthetic, and now I don't think they even say anything about being synthetic, at least that I saw last. Do they? And the guy that did/rarely does the oil filter study didn't speak highly of them and said they were just like another brand (can't remember but wasn't Mobile 1).Originally posted by: tallman45

any deals on Mobil-1 filters? They rock.
Yes they are called Bosch, they use the same sythetic media and pressure valve. For 1/2 the price of the Mobil1 filter, one could change the filter in-between oil changes, provided you are using sythetic oil and be ok.
Heh. From that page:Originally posted by: Oceanus
OS thanks!
I remember the first time I noticed one local Target selling Mobil 1 for under $4 while the other two had it for $5.
Chris Longhurst's Engine Oil Bible I found this to be informative, and naturally long and boring (given the topic what do you expect).

various places to buy mobil 1;
Target
various weights, no 0w-20
3.84 a quart, regular price, YMMV some stores do not carry it or the price is not this low. This is from the Montclair, CA store.
Walmart
various weights
~19 for 5 quart jug, regular price, no 0w-20 for 5 quart jug.
Costco
various weights, no 0w-20
~24 for 6 quart case, regular price.
Our Wal Mart has Mobil 1 5W30 for $4.30 and $4.74 depending on which tag you look at ($4.30 was dated May, $4.74 April). I think other weights were other prices. 5qt jugs were $19.82 I believe.Originally posted by: rich123
Columbia, MD WalMart was selling Mobil 1 quarts for $3.74 each. They actually wanted more per/quart for their 5 quart jugs. Go figure.
Yeah, AutoZone is the ONLY place I've even found it.Originally posted by: gigajoule
Slickone......... not sure about the cheapest, because M1 ATF and gear oil are difficult to find, but I have purchased both as well as grease from AutoZone. The ATF is usually around $5 a quart and the gear oil is around $7 a quart. A stick of grease is also around $5.
Any better price out there?

Yes it is. And I encourage everyone to email them requesting tests on conventional oils when they're done with the synthetics. They mention that they might. It'd be interesting to debunk the 3000 mile myth on dino oil (since we already knew synthetics would easily go > 3K). And paypal them a litte $.Originally posted by: tfbrown69
