Mobile Athlon XP, lots of reboots

Hi all,

Recently switched from an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton to a mobile Athlon XP 2500+ from NewEgg. I have an MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR mainboard with the latest 7.70 BIOS, two Corsair XMS PC2700 256MB modules, two WD Caviar SE hard disks (80 & 200GB) and a Radeon 9700 non-pro drawing power from the system (I do have DVD-ROM and a DVD burner, but those and other peripherals don't take so much juice). All of this is running on an Enermax 430w PSU, one that just predates having the second 12v connector for CPU power. While my mainboard has this connector, it has always run fine without using it. I'm running the RAM at 2.6 volts, and the AGP slot at 1.6 volts. The CPU is cooled by a Thermalright SLK-800 copper HSF with an 80mm Sunon fan. I have quite a few Panaflo fans in my Aopen HX-08 case for airflow.

Right now, I'm getting problems with a lot of spontaneous reboots and I'm having trouble pinning it down. I've had the CPU up to 12.5 x 166 (2.083GHz) and the system boots fine. I've run at default voltage, and in .25v increments up to 1.65 volts, but it has not solved the problem. I will say that the MSI board identifies the CPU as a Mobile Athlon XP only when running at default settings; if I modify them it changes to "Unknown CPU", though it seems to boot fine. The reboots are random enough that it doesn't seem like a heat issue to me (and Motherboard Monitor has never gotten anywhere near as high a reading as with my former Barton CPU). If I run the CPU at default speeds (between 800MHz and 1002MHz depending on 133/166 FSB according to the BIOS), the system only seems to boot halfway, then hangs during the Windows XP screen. I've tried running the RAM as high as 2.7v and the AGP slot as high as 1.7v (top options for both) and this has not helped. I'm hoping someone can give me suggestions, as I'm starting to run short of options and I don't want to corrupt my OS in the process.

It definately sounds like a PSU problem with all the spontaneous rebooting. What kind of readings are you getting on the 5v and 12v rails?

They're all just a little below what I'd like to see. Not major, but they can vary between .1 to .4v below according to the BIOS (I can't say how accurate the BIOS really is on this). I have had this power supply for a little while, do you think I'm taxing it too much, or just that it's not quite delivering and a newer one with similar ratings would work?

sounds like ram voltage to me. If you successfully get into windows and it reboots at random times, usually if i up the ram voltage to .1V it will fix it.

Run Memtest 86 if you want.

I would think if it was RAM, I'd get other glitchy errors, such as occasional bluescreens at startup or random program errors while booting or operating. Also, there was not a problem with the previous processor, running at the same FSB, and as I mentioned, I did try upping the RAM voltage. I'll try running Memtest86, but I doubt it'll show much.

go into windows and set your computer to not auto restart . if you're running WinXP go to system>properties>advanced>startupANDrecovery and uncheck the "automatically restart" box. now you'll get a BSOD (blue screen) when your computer locks up and wants to restart. write down the error code. the easiest way from there is to just google it. or come back here and type it in and we'll figure it out.
