the only reason why people really get teh mobile is because it offers far better overclocking abilities then the desktop because of its low default voltage, low bus, and unlocked multiplier. if you get the mobile, you should be able to hit 2.4ghz relatively easitly. thats about an xp 3400+, or enuff to match an athlon 64 3000+.

Also produces less heat due to the lower electrical consumption, making it a good choice for small form factor PCs

i would use a mobile due to the fact they are the best of the best and run very stable under clocked.
you can't sink a Barton core at 133 x 15 they run like mad.
my mobile runs stock at 34 c thats 133 x 15 1.45 vcore mem 2-2-2-5.
and as a benefit they oc well also

so for a server where reliability is the key, a mobile o/c just a bit would be good? which mobile offers the best bang for the the buck? in terms of overclockability while still being extremely reliable?

You = mixing matter and antimatter.

Reliability and overclocking do not belong together. Period.

Buy and use an XP-M, sure. But FFS, do not overclock a server.

xp2600m = 2GHz
xp2800 = 2.08GHz

but the xp2800 has the 333fsb, with that make much of a difference between the 266 fsb?

My AXP-M 2600+ does 2.665GHz on air...Prime95 stable and all that jazz...my old AXP 2500+ wouldn't do 2.3GHz...

the 2600 is a bit better as it is a lower wattage cpu remember the lower the watts the more efficient the cpu at a given speed

You can OC the mobiles to get 400fsb (200x2 dual pumped) to match the 200mhz of PC3200.

is this a household or a corp server and how many users are you looking at 2 ghz at 133 fsb with a gig of ram feels just fine as a desktop and i asume would be ample for a small server

I would agree with this - the mobiles work well, but you won't be running it quite the way it was intended to run. It's just one f those things; it will work perfectly, but if you don't need the maximum performance possible from socket-A (and you don't) then just buy a standard processor and run it at standard speed. XP2500 or 2800 are both pretty cheap, and will do the job very well.

Edit - nm you already have a board, I thought you were shopping for that too.

the mobile is a barton just a barton that passed the lowest vcore tesT these are really the best of the best in any givin batch. this is the BEST MOST RELIABLE cpu for a server esp at stock speed and voltage.

i would bet a million dollars that any xp-m is better than any non m xp in a critical aplication

it will recognize it as unknown cpu type at whatever spped its set at
but thats ok wcpuid sees it as a mobile.
once again this is a standard socket a cpu just its xtra sweet and the bridges are cut different if you look at a mobile and a non mobile side by side they seem identacle but for the bridges
