Mobile Workstation Use for Gaming?

A mobile workstation should be useful for light gaming and potentially more. Our son likes to play a game called War Thunder which does not have excessive system requirements:

I am trying to find a laptop that is capable of playing this game well and staying away from the higher cost and energy inefficient gaming laptops.

Are you able to refer me to any specific models? I am hoping a Lenovo P14s will be suitable but these can also get costly quickly. Obviously, I'm also trying to stay away from 6 pound machines.

Gonna take a stab at this...

War Thunder recommended system specs (under Video Card) say "Nvidia GeForce 1060 and higher". They mean a DESKTOP 1060, MOBILE parts are slower, so you need to translate this up a tier to perhaps a mobile 1070 which puts you in gaming laptop territory.

In modern terms you are looking at a laptop with a mobile RTX 4050 or perhaps a mobile RX7700S if you get lucky an find one for only $750 like I did.

None of the P14s I looked at have nearly enough graphics horsepower for the job. In fact I don't generally see decent video cards in anything less than 15 inches in size.

So you need to make a compromise. Going in size to 15 or 16 inches and going up in weight to 5 or 6 pounds gives you the space for the video card you need.

Stick to your thin and light ultra-book and you give up being able to play games "well".

Who is the laptop for and why do you need it to be less than 6 pounds?

One cool thing about gaming laptops is that they generally have 2 video cards and only switch on the powerful one when it is actually needed. The rest of the time they run off of energy sipping cards. I'm typing this now from my 7700S and no fans are running because all the power sucking hardware is idle.

If you wait for a sale you can find a laptop that can game for around $700-800.
