0w20 is going to be synthetic no matter what.

But no longer fully synthetic. There's Pennzoil Gold blend 0W-20, only $20, but Walmart's fully synthetic Supertech is $5 less, and after rebate so is Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic.

Seals might wear faster on old oil. Then stuff starts leaking through gaskets and then you would be hard-pressed not to change it on a shorter interval rather than top up.

I thought the Penzioil synthetic made by using natural gas was the best?

I usually use Royal Pure, but read the Penz was better and was going up switch.

I let my Prius tell me when to change it. Just ordered a Blackstone kit as well.

When I was in the driving biz I used to change the oil & filter every month to month and a half. That’s when the car (Town Car) sat and idled up to 15 hrs a day. Now that I’m retired I change the oil once a year and still use Mobil 1 10W30 full synthetic and a K&N filter. You’ll never go wrong. The other thing I do religiously is change the rear gear oil every 23,000 miles with Royal Purple 75x140. It’s pricey and worth every cent. Every one of my Town Cars has gone between 325,000 and 586,000 miles with the original motor, trans and rear end. I’ve had 4 of them and currently am working on what will probably be my last one; a 2004 Ultimate Edition with only 108,000 miles on it right now. I bought it with 40,000 in 2008.

I also run ethanol free pure gas in it most of the time, 90 octane. Unlike ethanol gas, which starts breaking down after two weeks, pure gas will hold up for a year. As for mpg, with ethanol I get between 22-23mpg Highway. With puregas I’m hitting a pretty consistent 25-26mpg and that’s at around a steady 65-70mph. It’s worth every penny, which is about $.15-.25 a gallon more. The car just runs smoother also.

I change my oil once/year regardless of how little I drive. For one of my vehicles that's less than 2k miles. I would change the oil myself but my better half wants the dealer to take care of it (still under warranty). They charge me $350 for the oil change including inspection (free) and emission ($20 exempt due to too little mileage driven).
Wait a fucken second, noone reacted to this guy paying $330 for an oil change?

Even by stealership standards, that is insane.

I think I first started using synthetic oil in the early 1990s, when I was running a three-car fleet of '79 Civics. AAA Magazine brought to my attention the 10K longevity of synthetic.

But I'd never allow more than 4K miles before I changed the oil.

My mechanic -- who may want to sell me more oil changes -- noted that his father had changed his oil ever month or two. He didn't elaborate on his father's monthly mileage, even so.

Synthetic doesn't break down as fast as regular motor oil. The only reason not to use synthetic would arise from an oil leak that requires more than a quart every 1K miles. And if the car is burning oil, you have the prospects of an engine overhaul, failure to pass emissions, and the minor extra expense on oil as your immediate factors.

Personally, I wouldn't make much of a distinction between "10K" and "20k" synthetic formulations. If you change the oil and filter yourself, more frequent changes are an inconvenience. It's an inconvenience anyway if you take the car periodically to the mechanic for an oil change, and you might pay $80 for it. The advantage of longer lasting synthetic formulations only allows for less inconvenience and some chump-change savings.

I take my car to Valvoline oil change center because its a pain to get under my car to do it myself. I only have them change the oil and filter though and I bring both.
I do all services on my truck and motorcycle though as it is easy to do. I use synthetic in all my vehicles. Redline in the bike, Mobile 1 in the car and royal purple in the truck. My wife uses conventional oil in her car and takes it to Infinity dealer for services. (I have enough on my plate so I don't take care of her car unless it is under the hood. No getting under that FX35 for me.

I really want a lift installed in my long ass driveway but the wife is fighting me on it.
