I need suggestions for a good mobo for an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane. I won't be using SLI or doing gaming. Mostly Photoshop and DVD burning. I've used many ASUS boards and have had good luck with them , but am open to other brands. I plan on OCing.
I already have the x2 5000 and ain't gonna send it back and go Intel.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Thanks for the reply, Iron Woode. Budget for MB is $125 max, probably. Any more than that is going to be SLI or Crossfire, isn't it? I'll have 2 gigs of ram. Running Win XP SP2.

then the Asus board would be fine for what you need. Nothing fancy, stable and very well priced. I have sold 3 systems with that board with 4400+'s in them. Onboard video isn't half bad either and should suffice for your needs.

I like the Biostar 570SLI works great - no onboard video.
Also the Gigabyte 690G-S3H - (or newer version 790G) has on board video, sound, lan and HDMI
Asus is also my pick for boards except that i did not like their offerings for the AM2
Both boards overclock well

I am not fond of gigabyte boards.

I use a combination of Asus and MSI.

A 570SLI is way more than is needed for dvd burning and photoshoping. Unless the board is really cheap.

I use an Asus M2NPV-VM for my HTPC and an MSI K9N Platinum for my main rig.

How about the Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H.

I have the same processor as you do and ordered this board for an HTPC build, but the board itself is just solid for a mATX motherboard.

With a modded bios update you can change voltage settings and overclock to your hearts content.

Awesome board, fully loaded.

Shoot, it sounds like I work for Gigabyte

Wait for the upcoming chipsets (all expected in March at CeBIT):

- AMD 780G
- GeForce 8200/8300 mGPU
- nForce 730a
- nForce 750a SLI
- nForce 780a SLI

They are completely new chipsets replacing old to ancient AMD 690G, GeForce 6150/7050, nForce 520/550/560/570 Ultra/570 SLI/590 SLI chipsets. All of them have integrated graphics and you even don't need a discrete video card (except for 730a which has IGP for Hybrid SLI, but lacks VGA/DVI ports).

adopting a new chipset can be problematic. The older ones are stable and easy to deal with, while brand new ones are an unknown quantity.

I have noticed numerous problems with the new AM2+ boards.

I just wanted to err on the side of caution and recommend a dependable if not a loaded MB. There are other choices, but I figured a simple Asus board would be the easiest to get.

Perhaps a 570 non SLI board would also be good choice.

Yeah, that applies to every new chipset (including the past 570 chipset), but eventually most problems if exist will be fixed with the release of newer BIOS and drivers. Sticking to the ancient chipset (570 was released in May 2006!) may be good for a certain type of people, however.

Good choice despite the rambling from Iron Woode. I use it in my HTPC and have the 4000+ over clocked - see sig. I also bought some Crucial Rendition very cheap (2 1G sticks), I think 20.00 each stick. There is a setting in BIOS to assist the overclock stability - post here and i will give you some screenies.
Many will say that Gigabyte is this and that , Asus is this and that etc etc - bottom line do your research - I like trying different manufacturers for the heck of it and was pleasantly surprised at say Biostar for example.

sorry for posting my opinion.

I had some bad experiences with Gigabyte. Never said the new ones were bad boards, but I haven't bought one in a long time because they are hard to get here. Asus is just easier to get here.

I read lots of reviews and noticed problems on a number of new AM2+ boards, such as Phenom not running stable, overclocking issues and AMD 6000+ series not working at all on these boards.

Sometimes these are revision issues others are BIOS issues. This is why I don't jump on every new thing that comes out. I wait until these issues are addressed. I am a cautious person because customers deserve a solid system.

Insult me all you want, but my customer failure rate since 1997 has been zero.

Good choice on the board.

You'll like it.

Keep us updated on how it's going with the build.

Another vote for a 690G based board. However there are reports of 790G coming out shortly.

Alrighty, got the 5000+ Black Edition, the Gigabyte 690G-S3H, 2gig of CorsairXMS2 DDR 800, Seagate 500gig Hd. Everest runs for 24hrs, no prob, Memtest runs without a hiccup. Prime craps out after 45 seconds, Orthos too. Do I have a bum processor, or what? Running stock, No OC.
Any suggestions?

May want to start a new thread.

BE does not come with a heatsink, so what are you using?

Cooling and voltage are the first suspects. Heatsink mounted ok? Check the core temps while you run Prime95. Heatsink paste too thick? HS Fan running ok, etc.

Core voltage set properly in the bios? Good practice to clear cmos and load optimal default settings.

Check out X64 OC thread on Anandtech. Test each variable one by one. How fast can the memory go, the HT bus, and the cpu.

Hidden bios menu <CNTL> & <F1> on the Gigabyte boards (why do they hide it?).

5000+ BE should have lots of headroom for overclocking, up to 3.1 GHz and beyond.

Thanks Replay,
I started a new thread over in Processors and Overclocking. I appreciate your input. I'm using a Scythe Andy Samurai and temps were running 113- 115 F running Prime.
