Mobo for K6-2 500Mhz

I'm going cheap and trying to make good use out of my existing Pentium 200MMX machine. The computer has a generic Taiwan made TX motherboard and crashes on me all the time. Nothing's stable: Win 95, NT, 98, 2000 (barely got 2000 installed but won't boot after installation).

Instead of spending over a grand, I decided to spend about $150.00 and just replace the motherboard and the cpu.

If I get a K6-2 500 or 550Mhz, what's the best motherboard? Memory brand? I remember seeing a recommendation a few months ago but can't find it now.

Thanks

The most modern designs, with well-fed AGP slots, good CPU voltage regulators, system health monitors, large L2 cache:

BAT form factor: DFI K6BV3+/66-2MB. No other board available with said features. About USD 75.

ATX: Epox MVP3G5, Tyan 1590-2 (also w/ onboard sound). These have 2 ISA, 5 PCI. DFI K6XV3+/66-2 is a lot cheaper, yet has only 4 PCI (and 3 ISA).

Yesterday I installed yet another K6BV3+/66-2, stuffed to the max with a K6-2/533, 256 MByte of generic PC100 SDRAM, an ATI All-in-Wonder 128, an SB!Live 1024, a Realtek 10/100TX NIC, and a Tekram UWSCSI. Zero problems, everything works without tweaking the installation, rock solid stability (as with anything I used on that board model before).

What happen to your lovely all on one motherboard?

Just kidding....

DFI is only way to go with K6-2

See I'm thinking of going Celeron
What do you think would be a good motherboard for it?
ABIT or DFI
what model?

I'd stay away from Gigabyte's GA5AX r5.2 as it has problems with it's apg slot, and high end video cards. I also question any board with an Ali chipset.

I assume you are looking for an AT style mobo since that is what you are replacing. I have assembled several different systems for friends, relatives, co-workers, etc...who wanted an inexpensive upgrade like you, and have used boards from Gigabyte, Tekram, Soyo, Tyan, and Epox.

I strongly recommend the Epox EP-MVP3C2 board if you are sticking with the AT form factor. It has 2X AGP, 4 PCI, 2 ISA, 3 SDRAM (no 72 pin), and supports ATA66 drives. Most importantly, it is super stable. You can get it for $69 from Bunta.com (excluding shipping and optional USB socket/adapters). As for the memory, any decent CAS 2 SDRAM will work in this board as I have mixed brands of 64 meg chips which run stable at CAS 2 in the BIOS setup.

If you are looking for ATX style board, the Epox EP-MVP3G or EP-MVP3G5 are both good. The Tyan 1598 is also very good.

Compared to the MVP3C2, the DFI K6BV3+/66-2 has all the features, the same amount of bits and pieces included in the retail package, but four times as much L2 cache and an extra ISA slot, at a still lower price than the Epox.

Reliability and compatibility are top notch with either - I have yet to find something that doesn't work with those. Just don't use the 75 MHz CPU bus speed on either - unlike the other available speeds 66, 86, 95, 97, 100 MHz you'll get overclocked AGP and PCI at 75 and 112.
