mobo not detecting cpu

ok, new here...not new to pc hardware at all but havnt had much chance to do my own builds due cash flow reasons

using a 939 opteron 146 cacje with a dfi nf4 ultraD (with GEIL PC3200 and an XFX 6800GS), but the dfi is giving me total f*ing failure on its diagnostic LEDs..ie cpu not properly detected, along with ram and HDs and gfx.

i think its a cumulative thing so even if the dimms etc are in fine , if your cpu isn't detected you still get all the diagnostic LEDs on. so 1st matter would be getting the CPU detected.

as far as i can tell everything is ok...cleaned the HSF and stuck ceramique on it and the cpu, got the HSF on and made sure i didnt crush the cpu, plugged in the fan .........so....erm...not sure what to do now. i've reinstalled the CPU (after inspecting for bent pins...none) but again no joy

Are you sure your mobo is compatible with the Opteron? Check DFI's BIOS page for your board to see if any of the updates cover your CPU.

alright there was a connecter not plugged in (always the same eh).....opteron picked up, bada bing bada boom

however with the PSU on my antec sonata 2, the PCIE connecter does not fit the one on the 6800gs....the individual connecters are in the shapes of squares and rounded off squares, and i have one "square" on the male connector too many...(ie. wont fit into the rounded hole)

hence i'm running out of molexs :| cos i have to use 2 separate molex lines for it....id prefer not to have to run HDs and optical drives off the same lines as gfx, (stability?)

His board is compatible. Any 939 board is.

Xfty, start with this post at DFI-Street.com and go from there. Make sure that your hardware meets their requirements, and that you have attached all FOUR power connections to the board and the single connection to the graphics card :thumbsup:

I would add a couple of things to that post though:

1. Clear the CMOS. There are detailed (almost ritualistic!) instructions at DFI street.
2. Double check all connections.
3. Try with ONE stick of RAM.
4. Try the ORANGE and YELLOW slots separately. Some RAM is very picky about which color slot it will run in (this goes for single AND dual channel operation.)

Hi, MB can not detect anything unless the processor is going. Strip it down to bare essentials, MB, PSU, Video and one stick of mem, and give it a try. At least you will know nothing else is keeping it down. If it trys to post add the KB. If you get to BIOS SETUP then add things one at the time. The last one you added before the blowup is the culprit. Don't really think this will help you, but who can tell. Good Luck, Jim
