Mobo posts real slow when overclocking

I have a Chaintech VNF3-250 and a Athlon64 754 3000+. It has run at around 2.5 ghz for years with no issues till last week.

I booted it up for the day and it acted like it was refusing to POST. Fearing the worse I reset the BIOs with the jumper and booted up like a charm. So I put my OC back on and rebooted. Agian, didn't want to post.

At this point I'm thinking it is prepairing to die. So I reset agian and agian booted like normal. During testing I OCed the FSB just 1 mhz and agian, refused to post. Getting frustrated I left it like it was for about 10 mins, I come back and it is in windows.

Apperently with any OC it will take 5 minutes to post. When it does finally reach windows it runs like it always has.

I already reflashed my bios and have tried several older versions, all do the same thing.

Any ideas? Only difference is about 2 weeks ago I bought a new case that should be cooling it more.

Run MemTest to see what if anything is going on with the RAM.

Trying, I am getting some errors but that dosen't seem to be it. Still goes slow no matter what DIMM in in.

Run the test again with the RAM at stock speeds. It has long been said that OCing burns out components faster, and if you did not purchase RAM up to the task originally, then that is what you are experiencing, especially if the test runs clear when set at stock speeds.

I was thinking burn out also so I tested each dimm and they came up clean. Gave some errors on test 5 when together.

I guess the memory controller on the processor is starting to burn out. Still I wouldn't think just a 1 mhz change would cause it to lock up like it is.

Never mind that. Checked out the memory controller by downclocking it to 200 mhz. With optimized default it runs at 333mhz (even though I have all DDR400 ram).

Also stalls when I downclock the CPU to 800 mhz.

Hi,
What voltage is showing up in BIOS for your RAM?
Might have to give it a little more, especially if you are oc.
Also, what manufacturer made your RAM?
Might have to raise the latency of it - what is the latency at the moment?

Yea, had some other people suggest the timings so I played with them, no dice.

I've pretty much given up hope on it and decided to just use a windows based overclocker (nTune or ClockGen) so I reset with the jumper agian and let it boot. I reset and went to bios with the intention of changing the voltage to overvolt it. And of course it takes 5 minutes to POST.

To recap:

Only works after CMOS clear via jumper
Overclocking makes for slow POST
Underclocking also makes for slow POST
Same with changing voltages

Can you make sure that if you keep it at stock speeds and don't rev up the voltages to RAM, it is quicker to boot.

Also, have you got another hdd knocking around that you could put in for a trouble shoot.
