MOBO Thermistor question.....

I have had an Abit ST-6 Raid board for about three months now, and lately I've noticed my CPU is running hot. I have a PIII 1Gig with a lapped thermal engine heatsink and 7200 rpm fan, using arctic silver, too. Temps are around 45C in BIOS and 50C when running SETI (using Abit's Winbond hardware monitior). I have tried different heatsinks and processors, and still have the same results. I looked inside the socket for a thermistor, but don't see one. I have heard that Abit has certain boards where the temp is monitored by using two pins in the socket and the winbond chipset itself. If anyone is still listening, my question is this: Does anyone know how the CPU temp is monitored on the ST-6? Help please!

I went to the Abit web page and opened the manual for the ST6, according to that you have to connect a thermal probe to a header on the mobo, then to the CPU, have you done that? Is this a case of RTFM?

I know, I saw that too. The thing is, there are cpu temp. readings already coming from somewhere. I just don't know where. I am in the process of making a thermal probe to see what the real temp is for the cpu. I was just wondering where these 50C readings are coming from. Since I can't see a thermistor or anywhere on the outside, I am wondering if the mobo has an internal diode or something that may be malfunctional. I just hope the cpu's I put in there aren't really running at that temp.

You should build that Thermistor and see if you Motherboard is reading correctly or maybe get an external thermistor that does not even use your MB and see if that is the problem. But if your motherboard is the problem you should RMA it before something else goes bad. Or you couldp get an AMD processor that will solve all your problems. You probably work for Intel or something and wear a Michigan hat! By the way Jenny is hot.

Im think the only reason you cant see the thermosistor is because in inside the chip, the readings are perfectly fine, maybe a little hot but they are fine!

Getting a Thermistor at Radio Shack you might have a problem at the temp readings.
Most mobos uses a 10k-ohm @ 25ºC thermistor NTC. That means at 25ºC it will have a resistence of 10k-ohm. But the problem comes when the mobo reads the temp. Cos the thermistor have a betha coeffient that interferes in the temp readings of the mobo. And each NTC thermistor 10k-ohm@25ºC has a different betha coeffient. And of course that if you get at Radio Shack, all the thermistor they have there will have the same betha coeffient, unless they have different brands n types. IE model X NTC thermistor 10k-ohm@25ºC will have 3000 betha coeffient, all model X will have the same betha coeffient, but it will be different if from the model Y NTC thermistor 10k-ohm@25ºC will have 3100 betha coeffient.
The problem comes to know what betha coeffient the mobo has. So you need to get a NTC thermistor 10k-ohm@25ºC with same betha coeffient of the your mobo.
So asking Abit to send you their thermistor would be a lot easier than go to Radio shack and get one there.

Hope its help you a little!
