I put a post up awhile back about my friends connection and its extreme slowness.
Well I got a diamond supra max usb modem and tried it, and it seems to of helped.
Its about twice as fast... (it now benches at 22down and 24up, the old one did maby 7 down and 8 up. )
I am thinking it may just be the modem in his computer that is killing a lot of the speed.
This modem is kinda expensive. (I found it on tiger(that brings up another point, I will list it below) and it was 49.99.
That seems kinda steep for such a slow connection. So what do you guys recomend for a external modem?
The one I am talking about above is a Diamond Supra Max USB modem.
I really don't wanna have him pay so much. And the drivers/support from sonicblue is horrible.

Also I finally got around to trying it on my XP machine and when I go to install the drivers for winxp it stall my computer!!! Well not totaly stall, but my mouse starts to lose its movement, and the only way I can get it to go back is to alt-ctrl-del and end task. Any ideas on this?

And I need a good external usb modem so that I can check computers with and use on my computer here. Any ideas for me. Price isn't as big of a deal here, just speed.

Finally i found two diamond supra max modems on tiger. A white box and a retail. They look kinda diffrent, so I dont know if they are the same or not. And do you guys see any reason I should not go with he white box one?

I don't know of a good one but I can tell you to stay away from the Zoom 3090 USB modem. It worked fine under W2K but in XP takes about 10 tries until it will connect. I used whatever driver XP had at first then they came out with a "beta" XP driver. I couldn't tell the difference between their beta driver and the XP native driver; same problem. I just went to their site and notice that they don't have an XP driver for it still. In fact they have taken down that beta driver and the driver they list says its the same one that comes on the cd.

I took some of my old components and threw together a FreeBSD box to act as my proxy. It's using an old 3com ISA 56K modem.
