modem does not work

After installing the modem, It shows that I have a HSP56 MicroModem installed on Comm Port 1. When I go to phone and Modem Options and click on Properties, then Diagnostic and Query Modem I'm getting this message back" open comm: the port that the modem is attached to could not be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are functional." It will let me query the MicroModem , but it will not query the new modem ( that's when I get the message above ). I have reseated the modem 3 times. I have deleted the software and re-installed the driveres. I have checked the device manager for conflicts and there was no hardware conflicts. The modem is brand new out of the box. Its a Trendnet PCIV92A HIGHSPEED internal PCI data/fax/voice modem thats going a Athlon X1900 computer that's using WinXP pro operation system, I have 512 meg of ram. Please help..what am I doing wrong.

I wasn't trying to do that but everytime I take the MicroModem out I get a Windows conflict where it won't allow me into windows. I takes me to safe-mode.

If you have a sound card in the computer it might be trying to keep the com port to itself. If you have a sound card remove it and the modem and restart computer. turn computer back off and then install just the modem card and then restart. You may also have to go into BIOS and turn off any settings referring to external sound cards. Windows XP is suppose to handle com settings and IRQs automatically but sometimes the hardware restrict the choice XP can take.

thats very strange what does it say or show in device manager the conflict is.
