Modem problems (handshaking)

Hi everyone,

My uncle has a strange problem with his computer. When he dials up to the internet, quite often he cannot connect to the internet because his modem will get stuck in the process of handshaking. It will begin handshaking, making all those crunching noises and whatever, and then it will get to a point where it will get stuck where it just makes the sound of static like on a TV. It won't stop or return any errors.. it just keeps making the static sound until you hit cancel.

Sometimes he has to go through the process of connecting/handshaking 3 or more times before it will finally connect. This is making him really frusterated, hehe So it will connect, but it usually takes several tries.

What's wrong?!

The normal questions...

When it does connect what is the rate...? (34000 or less points to a phone line problem, static or...?)

Driver problem...? Update or try different ones...

Also what OS...?

Any OC`ing...? (doubt it but have to ask...)

Last... can you try another modem...?

It's a machine running Windows 98SE.. no overclocking, and there are no other local area numbers for the ISP. I'm not sure about the connection speed, I'd have to check it next time I'm there.

I haven't tried a new modem, but I could... I just got one today for a new machine I'm building, heh..

I have reinstalled the current drivers with no luck..

I personably had problems with my modem/badlines and I got a init string that makes my modem only connect at 28k and all my problems were solved. If he's using a USR Sportster Modem try putting &U17&N17 in Modems Special Settings.

90% of the time this problem is caused by line noise (which may be inside the house wiring or on the telco's lines).

You can call the telco and have them run a digital noise test, i've done this and it improved the situation somewhat.

I've run into troubles with certain winmodems and certain ISP's not working together right. If there is an update for the modem, like to take it from V.90 to V.92, that may help. On one of the occasions I had to put a new modem in to get around the troubles. I've also run into an isp that didn't have the right support for an old 14.4 modem, they just said that you need to update.
