modem problems

I installed windows xp on my friend's computer, but now it won't detect the modem, I've re-installed it, updated and done so many things and still it wont detect it.

Sounds like you need the drivers for the modem. What type of modem is it (make/model/manufacturer)?

Try to install on different PCI slot. Sometime I have experience with the card whrn I change to different slot then it fixed.

Take it completely out of the PC. Boot it up. Go into Control Panel - Phone & Modem Options. Select the modem for the applet then remove it. Reboot. Verify that there are no modems listed under device manager. Shut down and then install the modem again. Make sure you have the correct XP drivers. Good Luck --- I hate modems! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.!

Some Winmodems require you to install the drivers first, then physically install the modem. Remove all the drivers, remove the modem, re-install the drivers, then install the modem.
