Modem restarts computer

I offered to reload a friends parents PC (terrible PC)

its a K6/2 400 on a SiS 530 all integrated motherboard (Video, sound)...They use 56k dialup and have a cheap Winmodem. Anyways I reloaded the PC with windows 98 SE and now everytime they are on the internet and the phone rings, the PC will restart itself. They have just one phone line so they use it for both phone and internet.

Any suggestions? just reinstall driver?

I also added 128MB of ram to the PC. It had 128 MB, now 256MB, PC100.

sounds like a conflict of some sort to me.. try another slot and reinstall driver then test it by calling them... or turn off call waiting so no more ringing in =P

Call waiting turned off ? Modem configuration setup to answer the phone ? Re-install / Update drivers just about always the first thing to do.

Get a better modem. Will a K6-2 400 even support a software-based modem? I had an HCF (Host-based-controller - part software/part hardware), but not HSP (Host Signal Processing - fully software-driver) modem in a K6-2 400, with a Connexant chipset, and it really lagged the system pretty bad. If your modem is an HSP modem, I really would recommend getting a better one.
Lucent/Agere chipset-based "Winmodems" seem to be fairly highly-regarded as being efficent on system resources. The other possibility is if there is some sort of IRQ conflict going on.

Did this happen only just after reloading Win98se? If that's the case, then it sounds like the drivers simply need to be updated. Disable any unnecessary onboard hardware to free up some IRQs, if they seem to be in short supply.
