Hi,

Apologies if this question has already been answered somewhere else. Right now I have cable internet coming into my house at 240 Mbsp (download) 15 Mbsp (upload) and a Motorola SURFboard SB6180 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem than came from the ISP. I notice that the Wifi is generally very slow and the range of the Wifi is not very good. I want to upgrade my hardware so I can get faster speeds and better range. So was thinking of ordering the tp-link AX7800 router to help do this. My question is, do I need a new modem now to go with this router? Or can I just connect the new router to the Motorola SURFboard modem/router combo?

You can set the Modem/Router to Bridge Mode, that makes it work as Modem only, then connect it to Wireless Router like the tp-link AX7800.

On a related note, most cable internet providers allow you to bring your own modem (BYOM) and have lists of supported ones for the various speed tiers offered, thus saving you the modem rental fee and removing a bad combination device from your network chain.

Depending on where you are located, most, and that is a BIG most if you are rural, are going to DOCSIS 3.1 transport. But D3.0 can still deliver 500Mbs download if you have a 16 channel bonding modem.

OFDM/A are the future. FDX as well.

Maybe, but a lot of people are encountering something I just went through...

I'd always owned my own equipment, including modem, but recently when my download speeds weren't anywhere near what they were supposed to be, on a 16x4 modem with a 400Mb d/l plan, Charter/Spectrum fed me a line of bull about "oh we can't troubleshoot that unless you switch to using our modem". I was getting 60Mb!

They couldn't care less whether my self owned modem should be able to provide at least the amount it is capable of based on # of channels supported, wouldn't do anything until I took their modem. Fortunately, they don't charge a monthly rental for the modem but I miss being able to see the signal strength and logs. If they had wanted to charge monthly rental, I would have switched providers. Fortunately they aren't the only game in town here.
