modem trouble

maybe someone here could help me. when I am logged onto the internet (dial up) and click on a link it will start to go to the page and then do nothing, not go slow, but do absolutly nothing. And then after 30 seconds or so it cruises at normal speed, and then a couple minutes later it does it again. I reformatted in case of virus or something, no effect. My PnP modem and nic are both using irc 5 but I'm not on a network. I do have a crappy LT win modem which I didn't know how bad they are until after my system was built but could it be this bad. Same ISP for five years and had no problem on my last computer. Any idea?

If both your NIC and your modem are PCI devices then they really shouldn't have a problem sharing an IRQ. However, you might want to see if you can manually allocate IRQs in your bios, that way you can move the modem and NIC to their own IRQ. Believe it or not lucent winmodems are actually pretty nice. I used one for a while before I went to broadband and I was very happy with it. However, they seem to be rather picky when it comes to firmware. Certain firmware works better for certain ISPs. My advice would be to take the link below and download the latest firmware update if you haven't already done so. Once you have downloaded the file simply run it from your hard disk and reboot. If your connection slow downs go away then firmware was the problem. If they still remain you might want to try some slightly older firmware updates or try moving the modem to a different IRQ.
