I finished building this PC.After installing the OS I found that the Modem does not work.
When I go to Device manager I see the installed modem is a HSP56 MicroModem and the Ports (COM & LPT) show COMM Port (COM1) and ECP Printer Port (LPT1).
When I go to Phone and Modem Options and click on Properties, then Diagnostics and Query Modem,I get the following messege:
Error- The modem failed to respond.Make sure it is properly connected and turned on. Verify that the interrupt for the port is properly set.
How do I fix this?

Are you sure that it is actually a HSP56 MicroModem (could it be installed incorrectly)? Does the modem work in another machine?

Well, you're definitely not the first person to have problems with installing a winmodem. Winmodems use a lot of a computer's resources. The micromodem is a chip which transfers modem protocols to your CPU and to your OS including the DAC/ADC conversions, i.e., the Digital to Analogue Convertors and the Analogue to Digital Convertors. The convertors are needed to translate digital data (your PC) to analogue data (your phone) and vice-versa. A hardware modem does this internally without using a lot of your PC's resources the way winmodems do since a hardware modem uses the processor on the card. So, if I were you, I'd dump the winmodem and get a hardware modem.

check the properties of the modem in device manager and see if there are any conflicts if not try and update the driver from there using the cd that came with your modem.
If that fails remove the modem from device manager reboot and when windows detects it and offers to find a driver for it cancel out.
Then manually install drivers from your modems disk.

Also make sure that the modem is seated properly into the pci slot.
If possible try the modem in another machine and make sure you didn't fry it or something.

You shouldn't need an external modem for windows xp can handle it fine.

Stanj -

I wasn't suggesting an external modem Rather, my suggestion was that, if you continue to encounter problems, you might want to consider getting a "regular" internal hardware modem rather than to keep banging your head against the wall with a winmodem (the HSP modem that you have).

Notwithstanding the above, this how-to-install guide for HSP Micromodems might provide you some assistance. A good site for you to review is here.

If you do decide to go with a new modem I suggest a zoom external serial modem. I just got one and it is very nice. You need a com port on the back of your computer to use it. I got the 3048 version from Stapels for $60.00. It connects higher than the USR external I used to have. That is after a firmware upgrade. Linux likes it just fine too.

I'm having a siimilar problem with my modem installation. After installing the modem, I'm getting this message back" open comm: the port that the modem is attached to could not be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are functional." I have reseated the modem 3 times. I have deleted the software and re-installed the driveres. I have checked the device manager for conflicts and there was no hardware conflicts. The modem is brand new out of the box. Its a Trendnet PCIV92A HIGHSPEED internal PCI data/fax/voice modem thats going a Athlon X1900 computer that's using WinXP pro operation system, I have 512 meg of ram. Am I doing the same thing wrong as the original person?

You might try moving the modem to a diffeerent pci slot. In my old computer it was in a slot that shared resources with my onboard raid controller, so it wouldn't work right.

I see that it uses Agere chipset. Xp has decent drivers for it, so I don't think it is a driver problem. Perhaps you could go into your bios and turn your onboard com ports off/disable and see if that helps. But I would try a different pci slot first.

btw lightening can do something similar to what you are talking about.

I tried reseating the modem in a different PCI slot, but I get the same problem. How advisable is it to disable the on board com ports?

It couldn't hurt anything, unless you have something connected to an onboard com port.

I'll try that but will that lead to a solution to my problem. Should I delete and re-install everything first. I mean start completely over?

Nobody uses com ports anymore. Definitely disable them, i have always had both of mine turned off. They just waste extra IRQ's. If i were you, i'd shut your machine off. Pull out the modem. Turn the machine on and go into the bios and disable both com ports. Then exit the bios and turn machine off and reinstall the modem. Turn pc on and let windows detect it. Hopefully it will now be functional. If it's not, it sounds like you have a bad modem. You can find one online for under $10 almost anywhere.

I could not get this new modem to work by moving to another PCI slot etc.
A friend gave me a Motorola Modem that he did not need.
It worked the very first time.
The problem modem was a BestData.
Thanks everyone for all the help.
