We had a electrical circuits book during our engg course that was written by K.C. Ng. We just referred to it as the book by KC NG. Almost at the end of the semester we came to know Ng is pronounced as "wang"

NEF!! j/k

That is the american way to pronounce it though. Most people can't pronounce it the proper way.

Who cares if it's still open? I was too lazy to read al lthe replies and just posted an answer.

I had a professor say it NAH GUY EN

I don't know where she got that from. But then again, she was an old white lady. I was probably the first vietnamese student she ever had.

My last name is Nguyen. and it's pronounced "Win"

EVERY WORD IN THE VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE IS ONLY 1 SYLLABLE! (it just depends on how you pronouce it)

Actually... it can't really be pronounced using English words.

Win isn't exactly right - because you have more of a W sound in the beginning... more like a Wg - In... but that isn't easy to explain on the internet.

About the source of the last name, Vietnamese people used to take the name of the Emperor as their last name (ancient times). Guess who our last emperor was? Some dude named Nguyen. Hence the high number of Nguyens. Go figure

My Viatnamese friend told me it was pronounced:
We-Yen or Ween.

<< EVERY WORD IN THE VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE IS ONLY 1 SYLLABLE! >>

That's interesting...I never paid that much attention to my friends speaking in Viatnamese.

It is pronounced "win". Like someone stated, all Wietnamese words are monosyllablic, so hope that helps some of you out. Also, the language uses intonation to change the meaning of a word. Thus, my name, Nam, can be pronounced half a dozen ways and mean half a dozen things.

You'd need to hear someone pronouce "Nguyen" before you have a chance or saying it properly.

most people pronounce it 'win' or 'wen' for ease. or 'newen'.

i asked some vietnamese people what the syllable was like in their language, and it's not really close to any of those. closest comparison i could come to is like when you throw something at a cat, and it goes 'nwaio!' or when two girls are fighting and you make the catfight noise. seriously. at least that's my interpretation...haha

yeah, Nguyen and Huynh are the same last name. Just different spelling.
>>

uh, NO. It's fairly close in english, but not in Vietamese.

Win is close enough for an English translation, but it's really longer and with accents in Vietnamese.

And I should know (check the profile).

In fact when I think about it, it might be closer to "wieng"

I've always heard it pronounced gwen.

I used to work with Dat Nguyen's cousin. Not that that makes me the authority on the matter.
