Actually there is a growing number of Americans who believe INCOME TAX (and income tax ONLY) is ILLEGAL.

They do NOT file ANY tax report except a "declaration" to the IRS that the income-tax is illegal. So far, the IRS has not cracked down (but there are rumors of "prison camps" for these evaders eventually). Capone's mistake was that he filed taxes but LIED on the report about his income.

"Growing number of Americans who believe INCOME TAX is ILLEGAL."

LOL!

That's SO not true...

If you earn taxable income in the United States, you're required to pay tax on it. If you don't, you can be fined or put into prison.

Oh, they most certainly do crack down on these people.

In the most recent case in my area (news story here), the guy was convicted and will be sentenced in a couple weeks, probably getting three years in jail.

Hey all it would take is a 100,000 of us or so to stop paying Poppin, and the rest would follow.

Failing to file a return is illegal, filing a false return is illegal, and not paying owed taxes is illegal. The loophole involves the legal definition of "income". I guess the law is rather vague on this definition. So, you adopt a definition of income other than wages, salary, tips, capital gains, dividends, and put a big, fat zero under income, claim zero deductions and sign the form. Since you've filed a return, it contains no fraudulant deductions or other information "to the best of your knowledge and ability" and you owe no taxes, you've broken no laws.

It is now up to the government to prove you had "income". Considering the government at the very highest levels has trouble with definitions of words like "is" & "alone", it's not difficult to conceive there is room for interpretation on terms such as "income".

I think most people that get rounded up by the IRS are those that do not file at all (like Capone), file fake deductions (like claiming pets as dependants, or exhorbitant donations to charity), or those that do not pay taxes they themselves have certified as owed (they have a legal document on which you claimed you owed the IRS money).

Just be prepared to have a very good lawyer on retainer when the IRS calls. Personally, it's not a fight I'm ready to take up on my own behalf.

From the article:
But he said he had come to the good-faith conclusion that he didn't have to pay, or even file a return, after exhaustive research.

Not filing anything = jail

But when he wanted to move out of Penn Hills and needed loans, he relied on his Social Security number in providing false Form 1040s to banks that indicated he had paid his taxes.

Falsifying tax records = jail

If your friend is involved with some shady people/business be prepared to get your ass taxed when you turn him in and he finds out it was you.

I hope your friend has fun in "Federal Pound-you-in-the-ass prison" when he finally gets caught, because he will.

Agreed.
btw, as a current mortgage loan officer and former underwriter who has looked at literally thousands and thousands of tax returns, I can attest that there is a legal way to get out of paying income taxes. It's called being self-employed (along with extremely creative). Business expenses and re-investments become legitimate write-offs. Balancing profit with costs, re-investment, and depreciation equals zero net income which equals zero taxes owed.
Hey, don't knock it offhand. First, these guys pay for it in interest rates, let me tell ya. Second, small business is what really keeps the American economy moving, so the government provides enough loopholes to stimulate people into taking the risks in order to acheive the rewards.

While that may not be the actual case here, I also don't have a lot of trust in Dezign's intelligence in these matters so I will reserve judgement.
