Moisture in monitor? Or old age?

Hi there, for a few years now there has been a "smudge" or what looks like a stain on the top right side of my monitor. It isn't noticeable against white or dark backgrounds, so not when browsing or playing games, so I haven't given it much thought or cared. But it is getting worse. Also noticed some burn in when taking the photo from leaving steam chat in place for a few days, wonder if that will go away.

The monitor is a dell 2007wfp purchased in 2005? 2004? Not sure.

Is this something I can remedy by taking it apart and cleaning? I have taken apart a laptop screen before but not a monitor. Anyone with a similar experience? Will I ruin it by taking it apart?

Break down and buy a new monitor ... Best Buy needs your money.

Even when I get a new one, I would want to fix this one and use it as second monitor.

Probably the polarising filters inside are detaching, though this is rare, it does happen sometimes. The only fix would be to get a same display(from some other malfunctioned 2007wfp with working screen) and replace it.

My Dell 1905FP circa 2005 has the same problem down one side. I've been waffling on upgrading to a Dell U2412. On one hand my current still works, on the other the 2412 looks nice, on the other I'm a cheapskate. So far, the cheapskate has prevailed.
