Mom's Dieting Can Be Unhealthy for Kids

ALBANY, N.Y. (Aug. 9) - Mom's dieting habits can have a bad influence on the children. Some research indicates youngsters learn attitudes about dieting through observation. For some youngsters, that might mean an unhealthy fixation on body image, experts warn.

"It's like trying on Mom's high heels. They're trying on their diets, too," said Carolyn Costin, spokeswoman for the National Eating Disorder Association.

As obesity rates climb among children, health officials are warning parents about the dangers of junk food and lack of exercise. Yet few speak about parents who meticulously count every calorie that crosses their lips.

That type of obsession can be just as destructive and eventually teaches kids to weigh their self-worth on the scale, said Christine Gerbstadt, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

While fathers also play a crucial a role in shaping children's attitudes about food, research has focused primarily on women and their daughters, since females are more likely to diet and worry about body image.

One study published this year by researchers at Harvard Medical School found that frequent dieting by mothers was associated with frequent dieting by their adolescent daughters. The study also found that girls with mothers who had weight concerns were more likely to develop anxieties about their own bodies.

A study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that 5-year-old girls whose mothers dieted were twice as likely to be aware of dieting and weight-loss strategies as girls whose mothers didn't diet.

"If their mothers diet, it's a marker of how important weight is in the household," said Alison Field, lead author of the Harvard study and an assistant professor of pediatrics.

Even small cues - such as making self-deprecating remarks about bulging thighs or squealing in delight over a few lost pounds - can send the message that thinness is to be prized above all else, Field said.

"Parents, especially moms, need to understand kids watch and hear things at an early age and are like little sponges," Costin said.

Walking the line between encouraging healthy habits and not making an issue of weight can be tough, especially with parents already bearing the blame for rising obesity rates among children.

The best strategy is to lead by example, Costin said: If a fad diet isn't right for the child, what makes it right for the parent?

One Albany mom, Donna Choiniere, does just that. She threw dieting out the window long ago and has made fitness a part of family life. The 52-year-old runs marathons, and her 15-year-old daughter, Katelyn, is on the track team.

She tries not to keep heavy-duty junk food in the house, but does not make a big deal about it, and is OK with things like pretzels and popcorn.

Amusing.

It's better if moms exercise and eat healthier instead of dieting, so it seems.

And why shouldn't kids see mom "making an issue of weight"? Who wants fat kids?

Childhood (especially teenage-hood) is tough enough without loading Junior down with saddlebags and giving his peers one more thing to be cruel about.

Teaching healthy habits is one thing. Teaching obsessive behavior is another.

I take it you didn't read the article?

I grew up watching my mom take diet pills and try to lose weight constantly, but not in a healthy manner. I think that had a big influence on my personal views about my body.

I think it comes to obsessive behavior because the way people keep telling us to diet is wrong. Stuff like weightwatchers. Fat free popcorn is 0 points? That right there should throw a flag. Starches (and procssed ones) are the worst things to eat while trying to lose weight. Starch converts to glucose before you can say "liposuction". The excess in glucose a). causes an unhealthy spike in insulin (creating a tolerance for the insulin, thus causing diabetes) which b). makes you feel exhausted when the insulin falls back to normal while c). the glucose can't be put to work while sitting at your desk so it gets converted to fat and stored.

Fat doesn't make you fat, glucose does. You body doesn't just take fat and stick it in your thighs/gut, it processes it first. It takes longer to process fat than it does starch.

This is why the Atkins diet/Southbeach diet is better than most diets out there. Protein takes much longer to digest, so your body doesn't get a spike in blood sugur or insulin, so you don't have a hunk of glucose to make you fat. I think it [Atkins/I don't know about SB] is a bit extreme in saying you shouldn't have carbs [besides berries] until you are in stage three of the diet. Complex carbs should be allowed, accompanied with exercise.

The idea is very simple, but nobody (like my coworkers on weightwatcher who "can't keep it off") seems to realize it. Oh well, they can be ignorant if they like, but don't come whining to me when you gotta pay the lipo bill.

The other problem is we don't have enough physical movement in our society to help our diets. I'm sure you've heard, but European towns are designed with self-sufficiency in mind. Each neighborhood was designed so that you could walk to the grocery store to get all you foods. Here we have cars, and therefore no need for well designed neighborhoods, so 75% of the population has to drive to the store. Having a two-hour lunch break encourages you to go do something near but not too far away from your workplace. Eat, and maybe walk to the park. Can't do that in only an hour.

So in short, models on TV will continue to get hotter, but there will be fewer and fewer women who hold that form will. I think its time to move to europe.

I think the recurring theme is that moderation is good.

You can have your ice cream. Just don't eat the whole 1/2 gallon in a sitting.
You can have your beer. Just don't drink the whole six pack in a night.
You can your veggies. Just make sure that you eat something besides them.

Moderation is lost to so many people.

People think they are either fat or skinny. There isn't any "normal" any more.

Fat doesn't make you fat, glucose does. You body doesn't just take fat and stick it in your thighs/gut, it processes it first. It takes longer to process fat than it does starch.

This is true in rodents, but untrue in humans. De novo lipogenesis, or the synthesis of fatty acids and subsequently, triglycerides, from non-lipid precursor (primarily 3-carbon skeletons of glucose and amino acid metabolism) contributes a negligible amount to actual accumulation of body fat.

Eating more calories than you oxidize (use) makes you fat. Simple thermodynamics. Whether those calories come from protein, fat, carbohydrates, or a mixture, is the main driving force behind overweight/obesity. This is not to say that "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie." There are many effects certain nutrients have on physiology far beyond their simple caloric value; however, in the end, total calories DO count.

The main reason ingestion of excess carbohydrates causes fat gain is two-fold: In the case of carbohydrates that ultimately are converted to glucose, the resultant stimulation in insulin in the short term inhibits the oxidation of fat (at rest, fat is by far the preferred fuel in a healthy human). There is also substrate-level inhibition of fatty acid oxidation due to glucose metabolites channeling through glycolysis and the TCA cycle. In the longer term, insulin and glucose metabolites have effects at the level of gene transcription, leading to an increase in genes that favor lipogenesis (minor) and inhibit fat oxidation (more significant).

Fructose is a different monster altogether.

I do agree completely about the importance of exercise, though. It is impossible to lose FAT (not weight- fat) in a healthy, permanent manner without adequate exercise (adequate in duration, intensity, and frequency). Ultimately, what is required is a complete overhaul in diet and exercise habits, which basically entails a lifestyle change. The overwhelming majority of people are not prepared to do this, and so are destined to fail.
