What to do, what to do? Monarch has the 4400+ for $258 with shipping. ZZF has the 4200+ for $195 with shipping. The 4400+ has the 1MB cache but at this point is it worth the extra bucks? Either one is going in a 1 year old MSI RS480M2 board, so overclocking isn't really to be considered as the board is a poor overclocker.

From the looks of the reviews, these X2's are poor overclockers too.

It seems AMD is wising up to those who buy cheap chips and overclock to get out of paying for the high end stuff...

Very true. I currently have an Opteron 146 2.0GHz o/c to 2.8GHz. I haven't heard of anyone overclocking an X2 by 800MHz. But the advantage of the X2 is better multitasking. I could use it to encode my videos on one core, while playing a game on the other core. I'm definitely deciding which to get.

Pisses me off, should have bought it before it jumped.

No, Newegg and all these online companies with "real-time pricing changes" need to stop scamming their customers. If the system sees a lot of a product being bought in short time, it raises the price automatically. This is why I don't like supermarkets with electronic price tags. They can raise the price at any time.

Newegg has dropped their price on the AMD 64 X2 4400+ Toledo (1MB L2 cache per core) to $259.00, shipped free. I snagged one.

Edit to clarify the processor model

I got this Athlon 64 4000+ at mwave for $128.75. Did I do bad? I was going to get the X2 4400+ but this is half the price and also has 1MB cache. I'm upgrading from the 3000+ using a board that overclocks poorly. $128.75 is a lot less than $259.00.

Picked Up an AMD X2 4800+ for $299.99 + $2.97 Fed Ex 2 day air from Monarch yesturday!

I had bought a 4400+ from then when I saw the Tiger price of 309.95 for a 4800+ with 1meg cache.
I called Monarch to cancell the 4400+ and the rep asked why, I told him about the Tiger price on the 4800, he checked and said was great price. He asked me if I would buy it from them if they matched Tigers price. I told him that was what I wanted to do originally but the guy on the phone said they couldn't match the price, which is why I 'm cancelling the order. He said that he would not only meet their price but beat it at $299.99 for my trouble!

I guess it all depends on who you talk with.

The X2 4800+ is 3 freakin' 60 at Monarch! $360.99. You got a heck of a deal! I'd have gotten that in a heartbeat! Good for you. The pricing sites said the 4800+ would be easliy under $300 by now, but I ain't seeing it happen. I just hope I'm happy with my 4000+ with 1MB cache.

True, but the 4000+ has only one processor, while the item at Newegg is an X2.

Does the X2 have the 1mb cach?

The AMD A64 X2 4400+ Toledo core has 2 processors, each with 1 MB L2 cache. The key is looking for the Toledo core in the X2 series. These processors have 1 MB L2 cache each. On the other hand, the Manchester cores (e.g. 3800+) have two cores, each with 512 KB of L2 cache.

I realize that I didn't get a dual-core but I can't see paying twice the price right now. I'm getting this for an MSI RS480-M2 motherboard, not the greatest board. Eventually I'm building either a socket AM2 system or an Intel system (probably AM2). Hopefully I can get some money for my used A64 3000+. If so it'll make the 4000+ all the more cheap.

It's been 2 business days and mwave still hasn't started my order. I got an order confirmation email when placed, but since it still says not approved or packed. Do these guys always take this long? I emailed them and have still gotten no reply.

EDIT: Just got an email. It took about 48 hours, but my order has been approved! Now hopefully they'll ship it in less than 48 hours....

I placed an order for MB/CPU combo, tested, on the 25th and had an email this morning (27th) with tracking number. Less than 48 hours from order to shipping.

I just got my X2 3800 from mwave. What was disturbing was that half of the packaging inside had pretty much disintegrated during shipping. There was tons of green dust in the box. The contents look okay though.
