Monitor Gurus ! I am worried

Hello,

My 1 year old Sony 420GS has been to the repair for 2 months and now has been replaced by a brand new E400 yesterday. I connected my new monitor my PC and after using it for an hour I heard tiny crackling sounds coming from the back in about every 40 seconds. Is it normal for a new monitor to "burn in" in the first few hours and make noises like that ?

It could be expansion & contraction due to temperature shifts. My 15" will typically "pop" 10 or 15 minutes after I shut it off. I'm pretty sure it's just it's way of cooling off.

Besides, if yours is brand new, it's still under warranty, right?

Yes it is under warranty but I am tired of dealing with the SONY technical service. I am not in US so customer is not always the king. I had to fight with Sony Eurasia to get them to get me a replacement, they were still trying to repair my GS420 after they changed the Tube, IC, digital circuit board and my monitor was still blurry ! It cost them twice as much to try to repair it, instead to give me a new one.

Well, Sony Monitors are great, as long as you don't get the lemon !

Funny, I bought two sony 100 GSes, both of which died. Also, a multisync 50 I've had for a couple months just died. I wonder all of a sudden I get all these crappy built monitors.

Snap, crackle, pop is high voltage discharge, usually harmless but occasionally caused by bad insulation. It is not thermal expansion or contraction, which sounds more like clicking or creaking.

Eh'? Tiny ticking sounds?

My monitor has been making those noises since day one that I opened it from it's new packaging. I believe allot of monitors do this... I could be mistaken, but I don't think it is anything you need to worry about.

One time many many years ago I got a cheap CGA monitor (back in the day when even those were expensive). That beast was used and was continuously making those little ticking sounds, except they weren't all that quiet. It would tick like twice per second or so, and comparatively loud (compared to my current 19" incher).

I used the beast for years and it always gave faithful service. One day though it did make a large "pop" sound and then the picture died. I thought it was a gonner, but when I turned the power off and then back it it was working just like previously (which was good).

I believe that "pop" happened twice. Nevertheless, the monitor gave years of faithful service and as I recall finally got retired (still working) when SGVA's took over...

Thanks RentaCow, from now on I will turn on the music or play loud games so that it won't work on my nerves anymore
