Monitor incompatibility w/ Windows Longhorn/Vista

I happened to see a little article in CPU magazine online a little while ago that said pretty much all current computer monitors will not be compatible with the new protected content standards that will be implemented in Windows Vista. Apparently current TV's have this standard already implemented, but not so current monitors, so that such protected content will appear fuzzy on current monitors (including that new Dell 2401FPW people may have bought, so said the article).

As I'm in the process of building a new system, I'd prefer not to buy a monitor that will be at least partially obsolete at the time I want to upgrade operating systems. I have heard that Vista will not actually be that great an upgrade anyway, so maybe it's not hugely important, but if forward compatibility is possible, I'd prefer it.

Does anyone know more about this issue, and perhaps any good monitors (I'm personally thinking 19" or 20" normal or wide aspect at this point) that would be compatible?

This is news to me, I seriously don't think they are going to block certain monitors. If this were the case, monitor companies would have been making them compatible for a while now.

This is just my opinion, but I think that either you are describing it wrong or the article was wrong.

It's not false. Future High-Def media will likely require copy protection. Therefore consumers who don't have the right OS/software/hardware that fully supports copy protection will not be able to view protected High-Def media at full resolution.

if there were compatible monitors they would be advertising them as such no so people would buy those instead of ones that wont work on the new windows. i can't imagine that everybody would have to go out and buy completely new monitors for this. i really dont think i'd be willing to since i have had my current monitor for 5 years and i plan on having my next for at least that long, whenever i get around to buying another.

Just looked at the old thread. People spoke of cracking the code, but what I read said that a firmware update would not be good enough to update a monitor. Which makes me wonder if it is hackable. So I'm thinking, maybe don't buy quite as good a monitor now as I was planning, because if the new standard sticks, one of these days, even if I do hold off on Longhorn (likely), I'll still need a new monitor.
