a couple days ago my monitor starting "popping". it would make a "pop" sound while simultaneously the screen flickers for about a second or two.

does anyone know what is causing this or how i can stop it from occurring?

my monitor is a Sony Trinitron Multiscan G400 19".

thanks,

sounds like your monitor is going to die soon. there's no way to fix it, as it's STRONGLY discouraged to open up a CRT monitor since the charge in the capacitor can be fatal. your best bet is to buy a new one. i wish i could give you a more desirable answer but that's really your only option.

i had a similar issue and my monitor eventually just crapped out. i got rid of it and bought a new one.

Probably dying, but it MAY just be dust inside. CRT monitors have something called spark gaps. If a speck of dust gets caught in the spark gap it'll arc.

You could open the monitor and blow it out with some canned air. You might get lucky.

WARNING!!!!! Even with the power plug disconnected, the flyback transformer in a CRT monitor maintains a LETHAL voltage for several days. If you touch the rubber anode cap on the tube or the flyback transformer it's connected to, and there's even a small crack in the insulation, you could be seriously injured or killed.

The flyback transformer itself cannot store charge. It's just coils of wire, and maybe some diodes.

Now the CRT itself can act as a big 30KV+ capacitor, and there are a number of powerful capacitors on the circuit board that can spot weld a screwdriver to the terminals. Or, if you're unlucky, that current can also spot weld your heart into a nonworking state. If you're lucky, you might just wet or soil your pants involuntarily. In any event, touching the wrong parts can prove quite unpleasant, or so I've heard.

Try using a can of compressed air - shoot it thorugh the vent holes closest to the circuit board and it might clear the dust off the troublesome spark gap.

its a bad flyback transformer..
i was once told if you canc stick a thick piece of plastic or some insulator
material between the transformer and the point its arcing to , that may help but i
never got that to work.

wear some rubber gloves if u screw around in there.. like the thick dishwashing kind.
but i wouldn't do too much screwing around in there.

Older Trinitrons do this when theyre on their last leg. I had a Sony G500 21 incher do the same thing. It led a good life, I just used it till it didnt wake up from sleep one day...
