I'm planning to upgrade my old 17" CRT monitor but confused between LCDs.
Do you people think that low end cheap LCD are good as CRT for playing games(not a hardcore gamer, have 9600gt) ?
I'm on a tight budget.
I like the Samsung SyncMaster 2033SW 20" LCD.
Is there any other option available in that price range ?
Thank you !

In terms of input lag, response time, and color reproduction, no.

What games do you play? Any fps?

What are you willing to spend on the monitor?

Lol. I was wondering the same thing... I assumed he just meant that he couldn't decide between a bevy of monitors.

well, if he's monitor hunting, 'quarry' works. but i figured he meant quandary.

i think a 20-22" TN panel should do well for gaming. TN panels typically have the fastest response times and are the cheapest, and i wouldn't push past 1680x1050 on your video card. you can find one for <$200 if you watch for a deal. iirc i think a dell 23" has been popping up for like 175, but that might be a 1080p monitor.

Sorry My fault.....
'query'*.

So 16:10 better than 16:9 for gaming(fps like Crysis) ?
And should I go for TN panel.
Please reply with some examples(model name or brand).
I'm looking for 19"-20".
22" may be beyond my budget.

16:9 or 16:10 is fine for gaming, but TV and movies I think prefer 16:9.

22" is certainly not too expensive anymore. Just last week there were a spate of hot deals on monitors, from a 19" WS Samsung for as little as $75 with coupon, 20" WS Dell for $89 , 23" WS HD Dell for $150, or 22" WS Acer for $125 with coupon. Keep an eye on the Anandtech hot deals forums, Slickdeals.net, and FatWallet hot deals forums.

22" monitors are becoming the new cheap screen with 24"-28" being more midrange and 30" being top-teir. If $160-$170 is doable OP then go with a 22" and enjoy the immersion. I've owned two 22"s so far, both of which are on the market right now:

Acer X223Wbd ($160 w/free shipping)

Hanns.G HW-220DPB ($150+shipping)

Shipping for monitors on Newegg for UPS 3-day is about $20, so free shipping does mean something with them. Both have good image quality, but since they are TN panels they don't have quite the image quality of higher end panels.

TN panels are one of three main types of LCD panels and are the cheapest to make/very responsive, but doesn't have the image quality of the other two types: PVA or IPS.

PVA panels are more expensive and mostly found with HDTV's, they have better image quality but generally poor response times (which isn't good for gaming).

IPS panels have the best image quality and decent response times (generally not as good as TN panels), but are very expensive and typically found in medical monitors, $1000+ monitors, or some upscale HDTVs.

THE BIG POINT TO REMEMBER is that this really becomes an issue when you look into doing professional photography or other applications which require a high degree of color accuracy. It is not like buying a TN will get you some dull picture where an IPS will suddenly make angels sing and candy fall from the sky. Side by side these screens look different, but after some use individually the differences start to fade.

That whole explaination was to head off any concerns you may have about buying some trash product. Although I will say the Acer screen has a noticably wobblier base than the Hanns.G as while typing this the screen would shake occasionally. There are no earthquakes going around me either lol.

The bigger the screen, the better. I'd go with either of those 22" recommended by alkalinetaupehat. Most TN panels are great for gaming and everyday use. I used a 22" TN panel from Chimei over a year and half before I got my 30" Dell (which I believe has an E-IPS). The TN's colors were very vibrant, but the screen quality and viewing angles weren't as good as that of the Dell. Neither had blacklight bleeding. Before my move to LCD's I had a 19" CRT, which the TN panel had much better quality overall. I also didn't notice any lag input either during the change. Best of luck with your purchase.

I've got both a 22" Westinghouse 1680x1050, and a Samsung 205BW 20" 1680x1050. The Samsung has slightly better color, not sure if it's TN or something better. It also has HDCP, which the Westinghouse lacks. Both have both DVI and VGA. Both cost me around $200 last year or 1.5 years ago, which was quite a good deal back then.

I just got two KDS 26" 1920x1200 monitors for $280 ea shipped from buydig.com, see the Hot Deals forum for details. Those are TN, and suffer from some noticable vertical viewing angle "fade" when viewing forums or other things with a bright background.
