Hey guys!
Since 19" crt and 17" lcd are at about the same price..i need a recommendation.
Here's what i need: very light on the eyes, very good picture quality and also fast enough so i don't see lags when i'm watchin movies (no gaming)

A 19" NEC CRT works nicely but if your not gaming then an LCD would work nicely if you get a high quality one.

People say LCDs are easier on your eyes. Personally I'm not sure about that because I'm much more comfortable looking at my NEC CRT than my gf's NEC LCD.

If you're ok with refurbished stuff, this one is a great deal.

NEC FE991 or FE992 (the 991 is better but it may bo out of your price range) both are sharp, have good colors and are easy on the eyes. Also for $200-$230 most 17" LCDs are poor quality.

a 20" for less than $400 (which will happen with dell's crazy rebates) is definitely a budget purchase. It is also a long term investment especially if you are sitting in front of the monitor for several hours a day like you suggested when you mentionned movies.

But hey, it's your money

I have no problems gaming on my 18.1" Sony LCD from 2002. If anything, the LCD lets you game longer since there is much less eyestrain.

Haha yah it's bad. I used to only play computer for several hours a day, because that's all my eyes could stand with the CRT. Now that I'm using an LCD, it's basically until I have to do other stuff. Such bad habits.

With a good CRT your eyes don't, personally a LCD with poor color reproduction and excessive brightness hurts my eyes much more

do yourself a favour and get a 17"
the 19" has the same resolution but much bigger pixels so the text will be pixelated. If that's your thing, be my guest.

This is going to turn into a CRT vs. LCD argument but oh well, I have a 19" NEC Multisync and I keep it 1600x1200 and I havn't noticed blurry text, if you buy a good 19" CRT (possible for under $220) then the blurry text won't be an issue.

I would say go for a 19" CRT, but IMO I would go with LCD, go for one with 250-300 dollars range as they would serve you better in the long run over the cheaper brands. You could get one from newegg for approixmately 250 Acer brand's a good one.

Since you're on a limited budget, I'd recommend a 19" flat CRT since for the price you know you can get a very nice monitor and not possibly gamble with a low quality LCD. There are 17" & 19" Viewsonic LCDs at school and although they are nice, they don't offer anything greater than my 900NF at home. At least I can run whatever resolution I want (1360x1024 is 4:3, unlike 1280x1024) and have a higher max resolution.

edit: Just make sure the CRT is able to do 85hz at your intended resolution. Some people are okay with 75hz or even lower, but I gotta have at least 85, which my monitor does very nicely at 1600x1200.

for most people LCDs are the better bet (if you can stomach the idea of dead pixels but thats another post). CRTs do better with high definition, games, video, stills editing etc. CRTs also display more colors. LCDs are easier on the eyes bc of no refresh rate. Internet, document editiing, and general computing work it is generally recommended to use LCDs. Also LCDs use about 30% less power, which may or may not be an issue.
