I've had alot of help here for my new pc build, thanks for that!
Now I'm looking for a nice monitor to go with that pc.
The graphics card is a HD5870.
Budget is 300~400 euro (400 only if it's worth it).
Monitor is for gaming purpose.

Currently I'm looking at:

HP ZR24w
Samsung XL2370
Samsung BX2470
Samsung P2450H

Thanks alot in advance!

If you're looking at that HP, the Dell U2410 is an equivalent (but slightly better) option for just a bit more money. Not sure if it's available where you are or not.

If you're just looking for a gaming monitor there's no real need to step up to an IPS panel (the HP or the Dell) unless you're really crazy about nice colors, viewing angles, etc. The Asus monitors seem pretty popular on Newegg. I had a couple Samsungs at a previous job and think they're a good brand. And I had some BenQs for quite a few years, and I really liked them for gaming and other stuff at home.

The LCD thread stickied at the top of this forum should have some other suggestions as well.

I feel the LCD thread recommendations is a little outdated. But it was helpful understanding other aspects from monitors.

For gaming keep an eye on the 120hz models. LG W2363D may well be the pick of them.

LED TVs are the way to go. I have not seen an LCD that comes even close. I have my PC hooked up to my Samsung LED and there is just no comparison.

I have seen that Samsung does have LED monitors in 32 inch and 1080p.

It aint cheap but its much better than anything I have seen.

I suggest you that if you want to purchase a monitor for a gaming purpose than you have not purchase LCD. You have to purchase simple monitor because it shows good graphics and resolution than LCD.

I just retired my older 22" Dell CRT from gaming. I'm trying out my new Dell SP2309W with optinal sound bar attachment.

Basically I would break it down like this:

If you care about refresh rate, get a used CRT or a 120hz gaming monitor. Please note that 120hz Television sets DO NOT accept a 120hz input.

If you care about color quality, get a IPS (or used CRT if you don't mind not strait lines). I believe a lot of people on this forum like the dell E-IPS (don't know model number) but its pretty cheap and always gets good reviews.

If you don't really care about color quality or refresh rate, just get something cheap as it really doesn't matter.

My Mitsubishi Diamondtron is still working, but it's getting flakey. I had to turn off Power Management and use a Screensaver, because whenever the Electronics cool down the only way to get it working again is to turn it Off and On about a dozen times.

Not to high-jack this thread, but is there no such thing as a 120Hz, LED backlight, 2ms, thin bezel, quite big, if possible x1200 and allowing portrait mode monitor? The monitor is what's giving me the most trouble with my build, I keep switching between Alienware OptX, a LED backlit Samsung and an x1200 ASUS, it's driving me crazy.

Just how much of a difference are the LED back lit monitors? I'm looking at some on Newegg and not sure. I want to get a few more monitors to setup a 3 monitor setup when I get home.

I really don't think so. The biggest 120hz that I'm aware of is 1920x1080 most likely due to cost reasons.

And personally I wouldn't worry about the 2ms response time. This, like contrast ratio, is basically a number a company can make up for marketing reasons. They could advertise a .05ms GTG response time and it would technically be true. Going from 255 to 254 then back to 255 can't take that long can it? Ive had monitors advertised as a 8ms BTB yet need almost 50ms to change between different browns.

Fortunately 3d 120hz technology would look like complete shit with anything over a 10ms response time for any color change, so any monitor advertised as 3d ready will have a fast enough response time. If you actually feel like you need a faster response time, the only option is to get a CRT.

S-PVA and S-MVA (SVA) had no input lag and stupid fast response times. if it wasn't for this LP3065 i'd probably still be using it.

once you go 2560x1600 you can't ever go back.

Ever since my previous monitor died I have been looking for the same thing, Jim.

My main candidates so far are:

*Acer GD245HQ (called the GD235HZ in the USA) --> 23.6" 120Hz TN based LCD with a 2ms response time and a 1920x1080 resolution. 3D ready.

*Dell U2311H --> 23" IPS panel with an 8ms response time. This might be a little slow for FPS games but I'm not too sure of that and the IPS panel colours are a lot better than TN panel colours.

*LG W2363D --> Another Full HD 120Hz monitor.

I'm leaning towards the Dell at the moment but I'm just not sure if the response time is fast enough for smooth Team Fortress 2 gaming etc.

Input delay is not a function of panel type. It is created by the controller.
I went from 1920x1200 to 1024x1280 desktop resolution and down to 800x600 games, and the gains outweigh those missing pixels.

Whatever you choose stay away from TN junk, LED or no LED...
Thank you for your opinion, but please note that it is just that, an opinion. "Junk TN" panels may not offer the color accuracy of an E-IPS, but for most gamers, color accuracy isn't that big of a deal.

Get off your high horse, if color accuracy is that big of a deal to you get off your junk LCD and get a CRT.

If you play games with darker scenes, then the e-IPS and MVA monitors are very good. I have the NEC eIPS 23" monitor and the MVA Soyo Topaz. The Topaz is better, but both are better good, and much better than any of my TN displays, especially for darker scenes in games and movies. However the TN displays are certanly usable.

I don't have an LED back-lit TN, so I don't know if those are any better.

Overall, I'd probably recommend somehting like this, with an e-IPS panel:

For a TN monitor, the Samsung T240 had great reviews, and looked great when I saw one in person. I don't think its still available, but its replacement also looks good:
