Hello everyone,
Just need your advice on a good 19" Flat Screen CRT. I currently have a regular 19" Viewsonic, which has served me for years now with absolutely no problem.

Thanks a lot in advance

Look at anandtechs mid-range buyers guide. NEC/Mitsubishi FE991SB-BK 19" - thats what they recommend. And I trust them.

I use a iiyama Vision Master pro454. Two vga ports and 4 usb on board!
I may be biased, but this is by far the best monitor I have ever used (and I have used many ). Incredible quality and the most stringent safety standards in the world.
So, yeah, I am biased

IS FE991 made by Viewsonic?
what do you guys think of Viewsonic, Samsung and NEC for a flat screen?

Also, I was browsing on Newegg for 17" LCD's yesterdays and came across few that were around $275 and seemed to get good reviews. They were by BenQ, NQ (i think), and CTX.

What do guys think of these?

Thanks

If you're in the market for a $200 19 inch CRT, the Samsung 997DF isn't too bad a choice. I have one, and while I'm willing to pay the extra money now for a sharper image, I think it would be fine for someone not looking to spend a penny more than $200 on a monitor.

That said though, if you really want to get the best bang for your buck, I'd look at Viewsonic or NEC.

Sulaco,
do you have the recular 997df Syncmaster or you have the DynaFlat?

I was told if I am getting Samsung, to go only with the DynaFlat.

Thanks

This is the one I got a couple months ago when my Dell (Sony Trinitron) died on me. It has a three year warrenty and I like the downloadable software that is used to tweak the display. I like how briight the display is and Doom3 looks great on it.

Good luck in finding the monitor you want/need.

1280x1024 @ 85Hz for the NEC, thats weak

both the 2 19inchers i recommend does 1280x1024 @ 107hz.

my sony g420 19incher does 1280x1024 @ only 85hz.

Mistubishi Diamond Pro models are the best.I'm currently still using a Mitsu Diamond Pro 2060U 22" and it rocks.Excellent monitor, best I've ever owned and I've been through quite a few over the years.
I believe the comparable 19" models are 900U & 920 ?
Their DiamondTron AG tube simply are gorgeous. No LCD can match it's quality yet.And I don't think they will anytime in the near future either. If you game, you cannot beat these Mistubishi CRT monitors.

I kinda did a quick look at the other 19" CRTs at Newegg and they all pretty much has the same resolution and refresh rate you mentioned as weak. Well, whatever. I just hate to split hairs over that spec. In fact 1024 x 768 @ 85hz suits me better when doing general computer work.

BTW, I would still recommend this monitor especially because of the price and the quality of the display - and the monitor I recommend is not a discontinued model as the models you listed

its not splitting hairs, some ppl like me can tell the diff between 85 and 100hz. and any cheap ass 19 in monitor can do 10x8 at 85hz. why even buy a NEC if that is what you are running at that refresh rate.

and another thing, if you play games, sometimes you want to play it at 16x12 even on a 19 incher. Most of those monitors does only 75hz which is barely toreable for discerning eyes, the eizo does it at 85 which feels much better on the eyes.

its discontinued , big deal, jus tmight be harder to find.

Okay boss, no problem. BTW, maybe any cheap ass CRT can do 1024 x 768 @ 85hz...BUT the NEC I suggested does it better AND it is very much available at Newegg at a pretty good (maybe cheap ass) price...enough said and moving on:roll:

Oh before I go, buying a discontinued product is buying into trouble especially when needing service and parts down the road. Now I'm done with this turkey so stick a fork in it:laugh:

My 930 does 1024x768 120 hz. I dare you to put any crt up against it at high resolutions and see which has razor sharp text and no geometric abnormalities! Cheap ass monitor? It is renouned as the finest 19" crt available.

that is what my G420 does too, but the eizo i recommended does 10x7 at 160hz.

there is no point to run it at 160hz really, but when you up the resolution, like in games, it is nice that the refresh rate is still high so it doesn't hurt your eyes in games.

No one needs a refresh higher than 85-100 max. All monitor techs will tell you that high refresh rates decrease the monitors life also. If you judge the quality of a monitor by how high the refresh goes rather than picture asthetics, geometry, sharpness etc. then you are sadly mistaken.
