I'm looking to rid myself of this POS MAG monitor. I'm lookin for a 17 inch CRT, I here Viewsonic is ok.

Reason being that I can't go past 1280x960 resolution without these screen "shakes"

any suggestions are welcome! thanks

The Amphion on sale at Circuit City looked pretty good for a sub $100 monitor when we checked it out yesterday. The text was crisp, the image was near-flat and near-rectangular, and the price is pretty good

Just without knowing your price range I'd say get a 19" Samsung CRT at either Best Buy (955DF ~$200) or, if you live near a Sam's Club pick up the Samsung 950DF for around $170. I had to replace my wife's monitor last week and after checking the specs on these monitors they appear to be the same. I picked up the 950DF and I think it looks really good.

Oops...sorry, see that you want a 17". I agree with Captain Howdy that the Samsung 753DF is also good. That is what my son has been using for a couple of years now. You should be able to find that in the < $120 range.

I, too, have a SAMSUNG 753 DF. I've been very satisfied with it. I also have a SAMSUNG 763MB. A friend who works in computer tech support for a large law firm was here just two days ago. He was helping with some issues on my computer, the one using the 763MB. He commented that he liked my monitor. I was surprised to hear that, coming from someone who surely sees many monitors everyday.

As a test, I just set my resolution to 1280X1024 on both the 753DF and the 763MB. I'm typing this message under that setting. That's as high as they will go. I've never set it that high before. Just thought I would try it. Won't leave it there long. Makes the text too small for my normal use.

price range is around ~$150. don't care for LCD's, i think there overpriced. don't need a super monitor, just concerned that my monitor is dying (never used to shake like that at high resoultions). don't know if its really bad for my eyes or what (heard somethin about radiation). thanks for the suggestions, truly appreciate your input

NEC/Mitsubishi makes the best looking CRTs. Viewsonic's image quality pales in comparison and has bad aperture grill lines. Samsung is a good value if you don't want to spring for an NEC, but I will recommend the NEC. I have an FE991SB-BK that was $239 + shipping. 1280 @ 85hz, awesome clarity, great brightness.

Still not impressed with the picture on LCDs enough to dish out twice the price on one. Damn that.

Yeah I was skeptical about the Amphion that we sell, but I was using it the other day while we didn't have customers, and I was pretty impressed. Good price too!

yeah I heard NEC was good, but I had one of theyre DVD players, which i thouroughly enjoyed flinging at a brick wall. Price really isn't much of a concern i suppose. I'll look into the Samsung and NEC and Mitsu. Thanks for the tips again!

oh and just for thought what do you guys think of MAG monitors?

I have an NEC 2141 SB, and I absolutely love it, but it was pricey. BTW, NEC and Mitsubishi monitors are exactly the same (except for maybe the calibration software), but you should find that the NECs will generally be cheaper. I have a couple older NEC monitors also, and the quality on those is still quite good for there age. I'd say similar or better quality than comparable Sonys.

I used to work at a recycling center, so I have a ton of computer/electronic stuff that was supposedly "dead". Stuff that looked like it had potential usually went straight into my car rather than the electronics trailer.

Always get the *best* monitor you can afford, because it's most likely going to outlast every other component in your PC. Not to mention the simple fact that *that's* what you're going to be staring at all the time.

Im also in the same boat as this guy but i have a bigger buget, im willing to spend around $400 for a excellent 19in crt. I have a Nec 97F and I hate it, im kinda skeptical to go with Nec again, but maybe i just got a lemon.
