My monitor has been making weird whistling sounds. Does anyone know why?

DUCK AND COVER!!!

Seriously, I have no idea why it would be whistling... Last time I checked, CRT's didn't have fans.

I have to press on the plastic part on the bottom next to the screen for it to stop. Where the buttons are at.

Well, believe it or not, if you have really good hearing, you can sometimes hear a sound at the 15Khz range. I sometimes get a whistling sound when I scroll on a web broswer, but it's never loud enough for me to notice too much. I think it's just part of the basic power operations of a CRT monitor

Gonna explode, take cover!
Seriously, that sounds scary, the first thing I'd do is send it back for a replacement. CRTs arent to be messed with. So just becareful. I hope someone else can help you out with this.

I think something is leaking out from it. I have to change the hertz for it to be quieter. But thanks man

when a monitor makes a high pitch squeal it's one of 2 things either your refresh is too high or the flyback transformer is on it's way out.. shutting it off for a while it will go away as it cools down, but it more often then not comes back.. u may need to get it repaired...

great monitor horror stories =). I've had them die on me but never make sounds...I used to have one that would all of sudden get a yellow tint over everything, a swift hit to the side fixed that though...

do as i say not as i do...don't hit your monitor, what did it ever do to you? =)

My current CRT seems to make a sort of noise like that, it's worse at different refresh rates/sync freqs. Right now I have it at 1024x768 @ 75Hz, and it's not too bad. But sometimes it starts getting worse, so I bang on the side or the back of the CRT and that sometimes sort of fixes it. Sometimes it makes it worse. It's a minor whistle, not a shreek, so don't think that it's going to blow up. That usually happens more often when the monitor makes a "zap" sound, and then starts doing it often or repeatedly. I've lost two monitors right after that started happening, although one of them would occasionally "zap" since the day that I bought it new.

Even besides that, I can hear any and all CRT's high-pitched sync freqs though, it's really darn annoying. I guess I can imagine what dogs must feel like when you blow a dog whistle. Guess I've always had somewhat sensitive hearing.

I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF. I used to have it set at 1152x864 resolution, until one day it started making a high-pitched squealing sound. Ever since then, I can't set it to that resolution or it emits the sound almost immediately, but the image is perfect. Now I just use it at 1280x1024 and everything's fine! I figured it was the flyback transformer, as the refresh rate was set correctly. I like the extra screen real-estate anyway.

this is the first time I've heard a technical explanation for this phenomena. I get this high pitched whistling noise on an old CRT monitor I have. I have to drop down to 60 Hz to get rid of the noise (not exactly easy on the eyes) or sometimes just turn it off.

maybe you have your monitor running out of spec. I was running a 15" monitor at 1280X1024 and it looked perfectly fine, I think I was also running at 75Hz/85Hz. Turns out I was running the monitor severely out of spec and it was SUPPOSE to be 1024X768 60HZ.

Will a LCD monitor ever get this high pitched noise as it ages? Or is the problem unique to the CRT technology?

Mine used to buzz quietly. Then it died
... its all shades of blue..

Is your monitor very hot to the touch on the top? If it is, i would have to recomend the duck and cover strategy.

I've heard that sound on some Compaq monitors at my place of employment. They were set to refresh rate of 75; lowering to 72 or 70 makes the sound go away.

mine makes a high pitched noise at a 60hz refresh rate, but not at 85hz.

Both my Wife AND my Son can hear a TV running a bedroom away. She's caught my Son watching TV late at night with such hearing. It's eerie. I can't hear the thing running sittin with my head right next to it.

So, matter depends.....is this a new thing with the same monitor....or something just been buggin ya.
