"crt>lcd>HD crt> plasma" is a quote from a collegue of myne.

What's the truth about the scope of monitors? Which is the overall best type of monitor?

Not sure how anyone would think a CRT is better than an HD CRT, or did you get your greater than/less than signs confused?

crt monitors offer more colors (a good one, not a crappy one) and have better contrast, give videos and games more depth, the best performance for gaming, video editing and any motion applications.
However, they are subject to screen flicker, irregular screen shape, distortion, and fuzzyness with higher refresh rates, have about half the lifespan of an lcd, lose their brightness and sharpness over time and give off a lot of heat, as well as use almost 80-120 watts or power most of the time.
They are huge, heavy and cause eye strain, give off radiation, are subject to magnetic interference, and take along time to warm up.
lcd's shine when it comes to electricity usage, size, weight, heat dissipation, text clarity, perfect screen geometry, better tonal consistency (especially white), higher text contrast (crt's are limited by the electron gun's video bandwidth) and color brightness, but are not too great for fast moving things or serious photo editing, can have stuck pixels, washed out colors and are more fragile.
But they look cool and more attractive than a big hunk of a crt, and use digital connections (all new video cards are forcing the move to lcd by only putting digital ports).

Almost every video card comes with a converter for CRTs to use a DVI port.

Regardless, LCD is a better buy. I'd recommend the Dell 2405fpw, it's pretty inexpensive at $800-$900.

I'm sticking with saying crt>lcd at this time. Until the price drops considerably for a decent LCD, I'm not switching.

then again, i'm an old fashioned "bang for buck" kinda reasoner

I was very close to buying a 2001fp or a 2005fpw...but I couldn't ignore the fact that I can get a higher res, larger screen, for less money by going with a CRT. Granted, it's heavier and bulkier, but that doesn't really bother me

Reading things and usign them for long heats up your room and hurts your eyes. a good lcd > most crt's in most things nowadays except games, but the motion blur doesn't affect the fun factor.

I bought a 2001FP but after running it next to my 21" Sony G520P CRT for a few weeks I ended up sending it back,It just couldnt compete with my CRT when it came to gaming and movies.. I also agree about Bulk and Weight of a CRT,My monitor sits on my desk so why would I care if its heavy or bulky ..weak excuse to accept a fixed resolution, limited viewing angle, poor black level, inaccurate color producing LCD if you ask me

Also CRTs dont put out radiation, thats an old rumor that has been proven wrong many times.

Basicly if your main priority is Image Quality then CRT > LCD.

If you're HDTV shopping then it depends on what size display you need, CRT's max out in size at 36" so if you need bigger you'l have to choose another display type,Personaly I'd go DLP or Plasma over LCD strictly for image quality reasons.

I currnetly have a 32" Sony HDTV CRT and it looks better than any other type of display ive seen,The only downside is its screen size but its in my room so it works out.

I personally think that LCD>CRT.

I have a Quad 19" CRT PC and the biggest problem was that it took a lot of space to set them up and after about 1hr (each CRT running @ 130 watts) the room heated up by about 10 degrees F (if not more).

I also have a laptop with a 15.4" widescreen LCD and its Brighter than the CRTs (it hurt my eyes at first). And after playing games on it for a while I don't see any delay or ghosting from the screen. The room also stays at room tempurature.

Also there are not too many CRTs that are widescreen.

Just my opinion.

I must admit that my room used to heat up pretty bad if I left my monitor on for an extended period of time. But at school I have air conditioning. I can run it 24/7 for no extra charge, and in the winter I can just open my windows So I don't think the heat from them is a big problem. Air conditioning also apparently helped my motherboard to not destroy itself when that $%@&ing fan on the A8N-SLI Deluxe shat itself. So in other words, who cares what monitor you get, just make sure you have air conditioning

I'm still using the NEC FE2111SB I've had the last two years, and I can easily afford a LCD.

1.Flexibility- I can run any resolution up to 19X14 @ 76HZ.
2.Image Quality/contrast - I like having real blacks, and think the IQ of this thing is stunning.
3. I don't care about size, heat, or power- I have it on a big oak desk in a 400' room that I keep 73 degrees year round.

The LCDs I've used actually irritate my eyes for some reason.

I really like my NEC CRT so I'm sticking with it until it dies / I get a better CRT / something changes and I find an LCD that doesn't bother me and has something I want

Same here, the excessive brightness and that sparkling effect everywhere cause much more eye strain for me than a CRT, especially in the dark. The image quality doesn't even compare except for those LCDs with the glass coatings, which are still very expensive and only available in resolution limited 19" versions.

I got a new CRT a few months ago (Mitsubishi 2070) and will be staying with it for a couple of years until OLEDs or one of the other new technologies comes out.

It looks like the OP is talking about TVs rather than computer monitors though.

Well, for TVs I haven't watched and LCD TVs for more than 10 minutes but didn't notice any negative effects from them

I've used my DLP projector for computer and other output though and I'm quite happy with it.

I really don't have any desire to get anything larger than my CRT because whenever I want something displayed really big, I just send it over to my other display and I'll get something bigger than any computer monitor can do.

I'm still kind of confused about the question though and don't see an answer to TheSnowman's question anywhere and it's not making sense to me either.

Yea most likely, but the contrast ratio on that model is low (400:1) so its going to have grey'ish washed out black levels , for example the Dell 2405FPW has a 1000:1 contrast ratio and even it doesnt have pure blacks (although its probably the best ive seen on LCDs) .the higher the ratio the better the black levels, my 2001FP had 400:1 ratio and it looked awful compared to my CRT during dark scenes in movies and games such as Doom 3 / Splinter Cell / Halflife 2 etc.
