I don't really crave for mooncake... but I do like the one that has a shit ton of stuff in it... kind of like a trail mix of some sort. Goes good with some tea! Woo! Too bad this shit is so expensive... (I hate having to buy some for my past/current gfs parents since everybody seems partial to what they like and have always bought).

For those that have never tried it, don't knock it until you do.

And for those who have had bad ones... you really don't know what it's supposed to taste like until you've gotten it from a good bakery. Trying to enjoy the ones that come pre-made and frozen is like trying to enjoy a pie made a year ago.

That's my favorite too! (though, I really like the lotus ones and red bean ones, too.)

I find it interesting that there's so much appreciation for the yolk inside. For me and my wife and most of our american-raised friends, the "luxurious" yolk is a huge, salty turnoff and we pawn off those slices onto others.

sun cake > moon cake

I agree, though old wife cakes are my favorite.

ewww.. nutty mooncake.

Costco sells the traditional double yolk lotus version. 4pack for $14.
1/2 the price at Chinatown markets

It's pretty good if you get good quality ones. The key is to eat only a very small portion of it. I would never eat more than 1/4 of a mooncake at once (1/8 is more the norm for me).

The crust and the lotus seed paste filling are supposedly made with lard. The yolks are salted duck eggs yolks. Mooncakes is the holy grail for Chinese fatties.

I wish they were made with lard. Nowadays it's all vegetable shortening

... Yes, but almost nobody actually gets home made fresh moon cake, just like most people never get home made fresh Christmas cake, which is why both are usually terrible...

What? I can't speak for mooncake but making a decent Christmas cake isn't exactly rocket science. I don't think I've ever not had home made Christmas cake at Christmas.
Even when I was a poor starving student who lived on beans on toast and beer we used to make a Christmas cake.

Completely unacceptable picture removed.

In case anyone was wondering, it was just a subtitled screenshot from the Dave Chappelle black George Bush, “yellow cake“ sketch. Got an infraction because it had the word n***a in it, which isn't the same word as "the n-word", in my opinion, especially when it's a quote from Dave Chappelle done in jest. But oh well, I guess it's offensive on family-friendly forums such as AnandTech...

Obligatory Wikipedia link.

I like the low sugar lotus seed paste mooncake as well as the mixed nuts one.

These are given during the Mid-Autumn Festival as also noted in the Wikipedia link. They can get pretty pricey and since they are commonly given as gifts, the boxes they come in are pretty elaborate.

Mooncakes hold up well to freezing for later eating. The unfortunate part of that as others have mentioned is that it is very common for mooncakes to be made months ahead of time, frozen, then shipped over to other parts of the world.

Is there a good place to buy them in NYC's Chinatown? All the pics are making me start to crave trying one at least once.

You eat them in Chinese new year. Anyway, mooncakes are really REALLY unhealthy. Packed with lard and all crappy ingredients.

???? Mooncake is only consumed on Mid Automn Festival.

You wish they are packed with lard. They have switched to vegetable shortening a few decades back. A lot of traditional food are very rich because the people were too poor to each a balanced diet back then. so the Mooncake may just be the only rich pastry they have for the year, which is not really a health concern. Of course things are different now, everyone is pretty well fed, making the rich food that much more dangerous.

I miss the lard ones :'(

Never eaten one since I was in Hong Kong. Still it's unhealthy as hell. Especially the one with the yellow yolk in it.

Also, it's freaking expensive in the UK.

If you are going for particular stores, yeah.

I paid 12 bux for a box of double yolk and lotus seed paste. 1 down 3 to go

I eat it maybe once every other year?

I love shark fin soup. I have stopped eating it cuz of the unethical harvesting practices. I eat shark 'meat' too.

Also, Shark fin soup is YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM!

I eat it because it tastes good. You should find a new moon cake baker and have some good ones.

Why the quotes? I love shark meat! Never seen it in America, though.
