Never eaten one since I was in Hong Kong. Still it's unhealthy as hell. Especially the one with the yellow yolk in it.
Also, it's freaking expensive in the UK.
Most desserts are unhealthy if you eat in excess. Mooncakes are no different.

Is there a good place to buy them in NYC's Chinatown? All the pics are making me start to crave trying one at least once.
You can find them easily in grocery stores/supermarkets. I wouldn't skimp on this - the cheap ones can be pretty badly made. Would suggest "Maxim" or "Wing Wah".
Well, that's why I said "most" people. I've actually had decent home made Christmas cake, but most people just get these crappy store-bought Christmas cakes at Xmas and they're horrible. Yet people still give them... just like crappy store bought moon cakes. What? I can't speak for mooncake but making a decent Christmas cake isn't exactly rocket science. I don't think I've ever not had home made Christmas cake at Christmas.
Even when I was a poor starving student who lived on beans on toast and beer we used to make a Christmas cake.
Well made shark fin soup tastes great. If you go to bad restaurant it will be bad, but most half-decent restaurants (mid-range and up) will make pretty good shark fin soup. Most shark fin soup is from dried shark fin, but a better restaurant will use frozen shark fin (which is much less common in North America). I've actually had soup made from fresh shark fin caught the same day, and I'd have to say it was the best soup of any kind I have ever had.Yuck. its like shark fin soup, chinese people eat it because of tradition, not because it tastes good.
I've never eaten one (nor had I heard of them before this thread) but the ingredients sound meh/weird.
Here christmas is all about christmas cookies and panettone (which can't really be done at home, it's very complicated and easy to mess up, but there's a great range of price and quality anyway).
We've been trying to sneak them through customs for a while now. A couple people have eaten them over there but have been unable to bring them back.
its high in cholesterol ? i like it but its probably too bad for you
In case anyone was wondering, it was just a subtitled screenshot from the Dave Chappelle black George Bush, yellow cake sketch. Got an infraction because it had the word n***a in it, which isn't the same word as "the n-word", in my opinion, especially when it's a quote from Dave Chappelle done in jest. But oh well, I guess it's offensive on family-friendly forums such as AnandTech...

Eat Well. Exercise Daily. Die anyway.
Yes, but where do you spend eternity? That is what REALLY matters.
Not to mention, the quality of life based on your healthy efforts is also rewarding.

shark fin soup tastes great. Shark fin tastes like shit. If it were anything else it would be considered garbage meat.I eat it because it tastes good. You should find a new moon cake baker and have some good ones.
Why the quotes? I love shark meat! Never seen it in America, though.
