Never eaten one since I was in Hong Kong. Still it's unhealthy as hell. Especially the one with the yellow yolk in it.

Also, it's freaking expensive in the UK.

Most desserts are unhealthy if you eat in excess. Mooncakes are no different.

Is there a good place to buy them in NYC's Chinatown? All the pics are making me start to crave trying one at least once.

You can find them easily in grocery stores/supermarkets. I wouldn't skimp on this - the cheap ones can be pretty badly made. Would suggest "Maxim" or "Wing Wah".

Thanks, I'll see if I can try either brand.

What? I can't speak for mooncake but making a decent Christmas cake isn't exactly rocket science. I don't think I've ever not had home made Christmas cake at Christmas.
Even when I was a poor starving student who lived on beans on toast and beer we used to make a Christmas cake.
Well, that's why I said "most" people. I've actually had decent home made Christmas cake, but most people just get these crappy store-bought Christmas cakes at Xmas and they're horrible. Yet people still give them... just like crappy store bought moon cakes.

However, I would agree that good Christmas cake probably has a wider audience than good mooncake.

Yuck. its like shark fin soup, chinese people eat it because of tradition, not because it tastes good.
Well made shark fin soup tastes great. If you go to bad restaurant it will be bad, but most half-decent restaurants (mid-range and up) will make pretty good shark fin soup. Most shark fin soup is from dried shark fin, but a better restaurant will use frozen shark fin (which is much less common in North America). I've actually had soup made from fresh shark fin caught the same day, and I'd have to say it was the best soup of any kind I have ever had.

I can imagine going to some Chinese banquet hall for a 400-guest wedding will net you terrible shark fin soup, but it's like getting rubbery chicken and soggy pasta at an Italian banquet hall.

I've never eaten one (nor had I heard of them before this thread) but the ingredients sound meh/weird.

Here christmas is all about christmas cookies and panettone (which can't really be done at home, it's very complicated and easy to mess up, but there's a great range of price and quality anyway).

Panettone is indeed awesome (and a pain in the arse to get right at home), but its Pandoro at Christmas isnt it? (which is also awesome)

Also Panforte (which is more awesome then the other two put together).

We've been trying to sneak them through customs for a while now. A couple people have eaten them over there but have been unable to bring them back.

Just bring the ones without yolks. You can get those through without a problem.

Or, you can always say that you intentionally purchased the ones that don't have yolks. And if they inspect, feign ignorance and apologize for not being able to read the chinese characters.

The type in the OP is reasonably good... a few times a year.

Go to Hong Kong or expensive stores in Chinatown and you'll find expensive "forward" flavours/types of moon cakes. I've tried quite a few, been gifted expensive boxes, and they taste like shit...

What is wrong with yolks? Do people still think they're unhealthy because of the GOOD cholesterol they have in them?

As far as the topic goes : tried it once, and not really my thing.

Cheap? The good ones are pretty expensive... I buy them at the local bakery freshly made for $25 a box (4 ct)... giving out an average of 10 boxes a year it adds up...

In case anyone was wondering, it was just a subtitled screenshot from the Dave Chappelle black George Bush, “yellow cake“ sketch. Got an infraction because it had the word n***a in it, which isn't the same word as "the n-word", in my opinion, especially when it's a quote from Dave Chappelle done in jest. But oh well, I guess it's offensive on family-friendly forums such as AnandTech...

that happened to me, as wall, after posting the obligatory Alan Keyes image in response to a typical troll thread, which used the very same colloquialism.

Yes, but where do you spend eternity? That is what REALLY matters.

feeding worms.

or providing the grit and ash that helps other Indian folk bathe in their river.

Not to mention, the quality of life based on your healthy efforts is also rewarding.

My only hope is that the irony of your making this statement is not lost on you.

Eat Well. Exercise Daily. Die anyway.

One of my very dear family friends (My dad and him and their wives met during the Vietnam War, the wives would sleep together since there was no heat in Seattle where they both got placed together after conflict...even my dad's pet dog (he was a MP with a Shepherd that killed) even had his teeth chattering there.) only drank alcohol on vacation. He also always kept up his workouts. He never ate unhealthy. He was sitting on a 8 figure retirement package. He retired in his early 50's and the same year was told he had terminal brain cancer. He lasted 6 months He was a VP with Merck.

We know people that drank crazy and ate crazy there whole life.

I think luck and genetics have a big say.

I eat it because it tastes good. You should find a new moon cake baker and have some good ones.

Why the quotes? I love shark meat! Never seen it in America, though.
shark fin soup tastes great. Shark fin tastes like shit. If it were anything else it would be considered garbage meat.
