Moonroof makes a huge difference with interior lighting. I also like it tilted up for ventilation rather than opening windows (too loud next to the ears). I was about to pay $1500 for it but they made it standard in '08s. I had the cover engaged once and didn't know until I realized how completely dark and enclosed I felt. Definitely wouldn't skip the moonroof ever again.

Rubbing my head on the roof would drive me nuts. If you can't find a car with a moonroof that you can sit in without rubbing your head on the roof I'd pass on it.

Have you thought about a convertible?

Why not? I like mine, both our cars have them in fact.

It's a plus when it comes to resale too.

i love moonroof/sunroofs w/e they are called.

driving on the highway you can't exactly open your windows w/o having stuff fly all over the place or have crazy amount of wind. just hit vent on the moonroof and all the air comes in minus the noise and stuff flying around. Plus its really nice to driving around at night with it open if you have those big roofs.

They are overpriced and offer nothing compared to a convertible. I'll take a droptop any day of the week.

Well, if you're buying a vehicle that doesn't come in a convertible and/or a convertible isn't practical a sunroof isn't a bad alternative. As I said before, we have them in both of our cars and we love them. I really like the one in my wife's Lexus, I get a fair amount of noise from mine but hers is really quiet even with it open.

Best option I ever bought (except maybe electric doorlocks, which are pretty standard these days). Pros:

-lots more daylight in (you can slide a panel closed to block sun if it bothers you), definately a plus, especially on depressing winter days

-driving with it tilted up is the best way to get air in the car, less noise & buffeting than cranking down a window

-driving with it fully open (which admittedly I rarely do) is 90% as good as a convertible, without the sqeaks, rattles, no storage space and lousy rear visibility they usually have-plus its a lot more secure than parking a convertible in the city

Negatives:

-Price

-Tendency to leak-make sure your car has a warranty. It took my Saab dealer three trys to fix mine, but once fixed it's been perfect since 1997

-Tough on tall people (I'm 6'1"). One thing I notice in my recent car shopping is that cars, on average, have a lot more headroom than they did a few years ago, but it is indisputable that a moonroof cuts into headroom somewhat.

If you find a car you like with one, and you fit in it OK, definately get the moonroof-you won't regret it at all.

I love thr moonroof. I even open up the moonroof even if I don't have the actual "window" part open. It makes it seem like there is more space inside.

Really? I thought something that tipped up = moonroof, something that slid back completely=sunroof.

Materials makes more sense.

from my understanding, a moonroof tips up, like jagec mentioned.

a sunroof slides back.

Dear Yahoo!:
What's the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof?
Heather
Crawfordsville, Indiana
Dear Heather:
Having just gone through the long and drawn-out process of purchasing a new car and asking that very same thing, we here at Ask Yahoo! felt uniquely qualified to answer your question. According to the helpful salesman at our local car lot, the difference is in name alone.

Of course, we all know you can't believe everything someone, especially a salesman, tells you, so we looked for confirmation. A search on "sunroof moonroof difference" promised to uncover the truth. Sure enough, the very first search result was a page of frequently asked questions from sunroofs.com, a site "devoted to public awareness and education about automotive sunroofs."

The answer?

"Sunroof" is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. "Moonroof" is a term created by Ford in the 70s, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs.

Hmmm, so all moonroofs are sunroofs, yet not all sunroofs are moonroofs? We found further clarification -- "sunroof" is the term originally used to describe a metal panel that would only allow light or air in when opened. A "moonroof," on the other hand, is a glass panel that can allow light in even when it is closed (provided, of course, you slide back that nifty fabric-covered panel to expose the glass).

True sunroofs, those made just of metal, appear to have gone the way of 8-tracks in automobiles, and these days, most "sunroofs" are really "moonroofs" -- panels of tempered glass, usually tinted, that tilt up to allow a flow of air, or slide back into the roof entirely, giving the car occupants a brief but tantalizing glimpse of life in a convertible.

Seems like our friendly salesperson wasn't telling us quite the whole story...

It just makes your cabin seem a lot bigger, and the extra light is also welcome. I use my sun/moonroof all the time, freaking love it.
