Anything else that's usually negotiable? That's what I can think of for now.

Just about anything that costs over $100 is negotiable. You just have to know who to ask and how. Some things don't have enough markup to haggle over (good luck negotiating a deal on a PS2), but if you have a good working relationship with the vendor, and he isn't going to lose money on the deal, it can be done.
I usually don't have the guts to haggle with normal vendors, but at work, I haggle with vendors as often as possible.

damn, what a screw up on their part. I'm glad you didn't cave in and let them take you for a fool. You got a quote, asked if that was the price, made the purchase, they called you said they couldn't honor the deal, then the owner tries to scam you, by not showing you the wholesale price and saying it would be 800. That right there shows were their frickin morals are. Definately not in customer service. What would they have been out if they sold you it cost +10%. nothing, but they decided to play. They need to go out of business. It's pitiful the morons on this board that think what you did was immoral. What frickin idiots, each and everyone of them, and yes,you know who you are.

The point is, small businesses need al the support they can get in the face of corporate and chain-store America, and the help they provide often times outweighs the price difference. Small companies need local support- rip off Home Depot instead.

How about you don't "rip-off" anyone? What Shiner did was not theft or a rip-off. He bought an item at the MUTUALLY AGREED UPON price and was even nice enough to let them double check their price.

Okay, 'rip-off' maybe was misstating it. If that's their price then what is the problem?
Buy the damn oven, then.

Good for you!

I'm glad you thought along the same line as I (see my post earlier on).

The store owner could have settled it amicably and come out with cost + 10% but his arrogance (or greed?) got the better of him and he comes across badly in the end. How long will he remain in business if he behaves like this?

Good job shiner...I originally might have told you to try to meet them in the middle even though I still think you were right in that you asked them several times for the price and you have it in writing. However, after reading how the store tried to screw you after you tried to be nice, yeah, take them for the original price.

And those of you doubting the morality of all this...screw it. It's not our place to do their job for them. They give us a price, we pay it. That simple. If they happen to misquote, it's not the consumer's responsibility.

It is the obligation of the retailer to set the price. It is NOT the obligation of the consumer to tell the retailer what the price should be.

Shinerburke didn't scam these guys, they scammed themselves.

As a retailer myself, I can say with no hesitation that the price marked or agreed to is the final price. You cannot back out of an agreement, or a contract. If YOU make a mistake and price something wrong, it is YOUR mistake and YOU pay for it.

Many here know I hold very high moral standards. What Shinerburke did was NOT immoral IMHO. He gave them more than enough oportunities to set, and REset the price. What the retailer did by trying to back out of a contract WAS immoral.

There is a reason why the law is on Shinerburke's side here. If you don't know why, maybe you should check it out.

WMC debate all over again.

Bah.
