This was my best shot tonight for what ever that is worth...LOL
so according to Alexa, Jupiter is about 500 million miles away and Saturn is 1 BILLION miles away...makes you wonder how we can even take picture like this from earth...

Wow that's really cool. Are those two dots the moons?
I saw tonight, presumably at closest proximity and quite distinguishable with the naked eye. I expected them to be closer together based on what I saw Saturday. Close, but nowhere near bumping into each other. Of course, they are almost 1/2 billion miles apart in reality.I noticed a week or so ago before I knew about this, actually deduced it must be Jupiter and Saturn even though I was initially thinking Mars due to Jupiter’s red tint. They were a degree or two apart then. Just saw them from eastern MA again right on top of each other and can barely distinguish them. Got my GF some binoculars as one Christmas gift and I really want to give them early right now lol.
Since the speed of light is around 670 million miles/hours, that was a picture of Jupiter 45 earlier than when I took the shot...Saturn was around 90 or so minutes...that is just mind boggling...
My pics were all bad though one showed Saturn as an oval so I was closing in on perfect. I did pick up the moons of Jupiter in a couple pics. They showed as nice squiggles.
We went out of to the desert to get away from the city lights and gain a bit of elevation. The rings a Saturn were amazeballs.

Dankk's drawings were better than my photos. But since you asked:...what pictures?

Three moons of Jupiter are visible. This is a phone photo taken handheld over the eyepiece of a 60x spotting scope with wind blowing on the scope. Looking through the scope, four moons of Jupiter were visible, the rings of Saturn distinct, and if you believed hard enough you could see a moon of Saturn.
are the moons of Jupiter always aligned in a straight line?Dankk's drawings were better than my photos. But since you asked:

The four biggest moons share an orbital plane around Jupiter (within a degree of inclination) and Jupiter's orbital inclination is only 1.3 degrees different from Earth's so they should appear closely in line when viewed from Earth.are the moons of Jupiter always aligned in a straight line?

Wish I had a telescope. I was able to at least distinguish which planet was which using my Canon SX50 on a tripod. Here's the best I could do.

Before 2020 comes to a close, Jupiter and Saturn will be so close that they will appear to form a "double planet."
The great conjunction, as the planetary alignment has come to be known, hasn't occurred in nearly 800 years.
Blood moons on Halloween 2020, now this... what's next?
