Really no excuse for this. Set up some soup kitchens and let anyone who wants to eat or get meals get them. There was one in a city I lived in run by a church that allowed anyone to get meals 3 times a day and they charged nothing, they just had a donation box. We use to go there for lunch the food was so good and we always put about $5 a person in the box.

That would work better than cash for food programs or debit cards for food. That way you know what is being served, healthy food, and everyone can eat there whether they are poor or not, do it just like the church. I would much rather have my tax money going to soup kitchens than welfare department payments

You linked improperly to a bad URl, that's a double-tap fail. Can you give us the proper link?

The number of Americans who lack dependable access to adequate food shot up last year to 49 million
Oh come on. Poor are disproportionately fat compared to others. Sure their nutrition sucks and some are genuinely short on food but surely this source doesn't expect me to believe that 1/6 people in the US are often wondering where their next meal will come from. As of December 2008 the US had 307 M people and 271M cellphones. Since we know super young kids don't have them we can very confidently infer that if that 49M figure is correct, literally millions of these people who don't have dependable access to food do have dependable access to a cell phone and although cells are hardly a luxury I cannot imagine what compels a person worried about food to buy one.

In fact upon reading that article I don't question its source data but rather its conclusions. The last paragraph indicates what kinds of answers people answer yes to but we all know that people often lack an objective view of themselves.

49 million people...I say bullshit.

It is possible... but if you factor in the people who could cancel HBO & showtime + 250 channel package, sell their $600/month car, cancel iphone service, skip disney this year.... we are probably looking at about 10 million who are short on food.

This, to some degree. I have no doubt that many live beyond their means, however there is also a big disparity between incomes and costs. Real estate, and insurance prices especially are rising far out of step with incomes. If you continue on that path, more and more people will be hungry - even those who manage their money correctly.

I think it would be better to offer everyone food instead of health care. Who needs health care when you are starving to death?

Who needs food when they have no place to live? We should provide shelter for everyone.

Who needs food and shelter without proper medicare? We should provide Medicare to everyone.

Who needs medicare without a job? We should provide jobs for everyone.

Who needs jobs when you have no car? We should provide cars to everyone.

ALL IN THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. I HEART THE AMERICA THAT ONCE WAS!

You mean the America that became wealthy partially as a result of evil socialist policies such as restrictions on international trade and limited immigration?

Do you think it would be bad if the government structured its economic policies so that more solid middle class jobs were available to people? ("Jobs for everyone!")

By the way, national health care and socialized medicine has proven to be more efficient and less expensive in terms of percentage of GDP than our current third world system of health care. Right now the United States is spending 17% of its GDP on health care--far more than any other first world nation--while leaving tens of millions of Americans uninsured or under-insured with the rest of the populace living in terror of losing their jobs and health insurance while also having hundreds of thousands of medical bankruptcies each year and with businesses and the economy being burdened by insurance concerns.

In contrast, other nations that have socialized medicine and national health care spend a smaller percentage of their GDP on health care while having 100% coverage, zero medical bankruptcies, a more content populace, unburdened businesses, and far less of a burden on the economy.

Still want free market medicine?

More Americans going hungry?

These sorts of things can happen to you when your nation transforms itself into an impoverished third world country. Just keep on shippin' middle class jobs overseas, keep on importing foreigners on H-1B and L-1 visas to displace Americans from middle class jobs, and keep importing impoverished immigrants to further depress wages for lower class and lower-working class jobs.

Foreign Ousourcing, Work Visas, and Immigration: Exporting American Prosperity, Importing Third World Poverty, one lost middle class job at a time.
