More Americans going hungry?

These sorts of things can happen to you when your nation transforms itself into an impoverished third world country. Just keep on shippin' middle class jobs overseas, keep on importing foreigners on H-1B and L-1 visas to displace Americans from middle class jobs, and keep importing impoverished immigrants to further depress wages for lower class and lower-working class jobs.

Foreign Ousourcing, Work Visas, and Immigration: Exporting American Prosperity, Importing Third World Poverty, one lost middle class job at a time.

You, sir, are an idiot.

And you desperately need to get a few stamps in your passport.

You linked improperly to a bad URl, that's a double-tap fail. Can you give us the proper link?

Here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/16/AR2009111601598.html

Oh come on. Poor are disproportionately fat compared to others. Sure their nutrition sucks and some are genuinely short on food but surely this source doesn't expect me to believe that 1/6 people in the US are often wondering where their next meal will come from. As of December 2008 the US had 307 M people and 271M cellphones. Since we know super young kids don't have them we can very confidently infer that if that 49M figure is correct, literally millions of these people who don't have dependable access to food do have dependable access to a cell phone and although cells are hardly a luxury I cannot imagine what compels a person worried about food to buy one.

In fact upon reading that article I don't question its source data but rather its conclusions. The last paragraph indicates what kinds of answers people answer yes to but we all know that people often lack an objective view of themselves.

If people lack objectivity then I am dismissing this post forthwith as the product of your fevered brain, although I should allow, I guess, that doing so may not be objective.

The percentage they give in the article lumps together families with "low" or "very low" food security. I'd like to see a breakdown of of "low" and "very low". I suspect people in the "low" percentage is much higher than "very low" category. "Low" is defined as people who struggle to have dependable access to adequate food. "Very low" defined as people who are sometimes hungry.

Great post! Thank you for concisely explaining to us in just 17 words why Global Labor Arbitrage is not heavily responsible for the nation's economic problems. People who think that it is heavily responsible for our nation's economic problems are just "sir idiots" who need to travel around the world adding stamps to their passports. You have floored me with the strength of your arguments and your reasoning ability.

Actually I found a breakdown of low and very low in the pdf.

U.S. households by food security status, 2008

Food secure households - 85.4%
Households with low food security - 8.9%
Households with very low food security - 5.7%

Source: Calculated by ERS using data from the December 2008 Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement.

-----

Households with "very low" food security is higher than I thought.

^ I agree. We are transforming into a third world nation.

This trend is not likely to reverse itself. Maybe people will deny it is even occurring, or maybe they think they know how to resolve it, but Americans continue to work more for less.

I'd like to hear solutions as I'm fresh out.

I really would like to know how many in "insecure" group buy smokes, have HDTVs and premium cable.

In other words, how many are in their situation because they have no choice, and how many because they choose to be that way.

These studies are useless as tits on a boar hog.

Oh I apologize for not being clear as to what I was commenting on. It was this bullshit:

yours and jaskalas's comments in this thread reveal your...idiocy. You have no idea what a 3rd world country is.

Really the ones most affected are the children and the elderly. Children have no choice. They rely on their parents to get food. It is very common to have parents who get food stamps but have no concept of budgeting. They go through the money in the first week of the month and have nothing the rest of the month because they buy steak, without ever considering the prices.

The elderly have problems with just getting out and to the store and applying for support. I have seen elderly people who have money but no food because they cannot get to the store.

If they attend a public school, they can get free meals, but this might vary district by district. At my old high school and elementary school, loads of kids received free meals. IIRC, breakfast and lunch were both free to them. But, they were out of luck on weekends / holidays if their parents did not take care of them or if they were too young to attend school.

USA has plenty of food. Instead of building basketball courts for the drug dealers plant a community vegetable garden. God helps those who help themselves. My Wife's 80 year old mother in New York City grows vegetables in New York City. They gave her the plot for free under some kind of program. There is plenty of excess food in the USA. Just plant some seeds.

They had subsidised meals at my kids elementary school, but I refused to use that service. I always had enough money to buy food. It is a matter of priorities. If you waste your money on drugs and cable TV and fancy cars and expensive clothes you starve.

In other news, obesity rate amongst American youth declined for the first time in several years.

Do you believe in socialist states? I don’t, so then what do you think the inevitable outcome from that failure is?

Probably nothing substantive; he might implement a policy to address the symptom while ignoring the real diseases.

Of course because that is how Democrats operate. They try to treat symptoms while ignoring the actual cause. If they fixed the cause not only would they anger their constituents in the short term eventually they would be obsolete as politicians. Whether they do this out of ignorance, naivete, selfishness, or pure evil is still up for debate.

What do you mean do I believe in them? Do I believe they exist? Sure. What that has to do with the absolutely asinine comment about the USA heading towards a 3rd world country I dont know.
