More Belkin refurbished deals

The networking equipment I got in Belkin's last refurbished blowout is serving me well (as I post on my laptop using a Belkin 802.11b card broadcasting to a Belkin 802.11b WAP), especially with that 1/2 off coupon they were offering. However, they're doing some more great deals on the refurb section of their website right now, just with no coupons. The best deal I found was for a 4-port cable/DSL router for $7.49, which is 90% off the list price they show. NICs for $2.99, 5-port switch for $11.49, that kind of thing. Alas, not much wireless, just a wireless DSL/cable router for $30 and wireless USB adapter for $22.49. If you need some miscellaneous networking or USB equipment, check it out at Belkin's Refurb Site.

Might be some good stuff. Half the things I ordered from the 50% off sale came in retail packaging still sealed up.

A lot of my stuff came in white boxes, but my wireless NIC turned out to be a higher version than advertised and seasled in a retail box like vk8 said. Not a bad deal for the $15 I paid for it.

How would I connect my belkin router(Using the uplink for dsl modem) to another belkin router? What cable(Crossover or Straightthrough) and from what to where? I need the extra ports for other pcs to share internet.

You wouldn't...that'd be doing it the hard way. You can do this one of two ways:

If you have (1) DSL connection, then connect a Hub (preferrably a switch if you have a lot of machines doing things at the same time) to one of the Router ports. If you're using DHCP, expand the address range to cover the additional Hub ports + the original Router ports (excluding, of course, the one your Hub's plugged into).

If you have (2) DSL connections, then yes, you would use a crossover cable from one to the other. Make sure you keep the address (DHCP and Router internal IP address) different, so you'll be able to distinguish one from the other. Also, security-wise, it'll make it that much hard for prospective hackers (read: 10-year-olds) from getting through to the other Router.

Hope this helps.

According to the Belkin website the 4-port cable/DSL router connects multiple computers to the internet but doesn't say that the computers can talk to each other like it states under the description of the 5-port cable/DSL switch. Anyone know if this is accurate?

Thanks,

Just picked up two NICs that cost me $15 at OfficeMax and it was about $13 shipped ($7.50 to ship two NICs??).

But, in the confirmation email, there was a link to sign up for xMsg. I went ahead and did that. Gives you a toll-free # (1-877-xxx-xxxx) to use for voicemail, faxes, email, etc. All of this was free

Anyone else used this?

Thanks,

Computers connected on this router can share files just as if it was a switch. Some routers, linksys namely, have a "built in switch" which gives each computer a max 100Mb/s bandwidth. This router does not appear to have that, therefore all computers have to share the 100Mb/s of bandwidth. This isn't a big deal if you only have 4 computers connected though, in the event that all machines are using a high amount of bandwidth they still each get 25Mb/s theoretically.

Thanks again.

While I know the big differences between a router and switch, I seem to have missed the practical differences, other than newest must be best.

let me attempt to correct something here.
routers are by nature switches with additional features.
more technically speaking it works in a different layer... allowing IP routing.
generally speaking, switches deal with mac addresses while routers deal with ip addresses and mac addresses.

it's the hub that shares the bandwidth with all connections.

switches and routers do not!

although it doesn't state on the website like linsys... (ie. "built-in switch" ... this is really just a marketing scheme), you can assume this by the nature of what routers do.

by the way, dleiss, shame on you for not knowing this with all the credentials you have in your sig.

I know how commercial equipment works, the problem I have is when the marketing folks get hold of retail, which you also point out. Seeing that some members here have had experience with the different models I want to know what the real capabilities of the products are before I buy. In this instance, the Belkin website is unclear, purposely or not, in its description of the 4-port cable/DSL router and 5-port cable/DSL switch.

Do you have an opinion on the functionality of Belkin vs, Linksys?

Thanks! I've been looking for a USB extension cord and $4 is better than the ridiculous $26 most places want. Of course, I had to order some other stuff to make it worth the shipping cost.

Thanks,

I just got mine via UPS today and its working just fine as a hub with DHCP turned off (so its just another hub and not acting as a router).

yeah you can hook up two routers together. just turn DHCP off on one of the routers (the one that isn't connected to the net) and it will act like a normal switch.

Cable/DSL Router w 5 port switch means on the ethernet end, each port has a dedicated 10 or 100mbps connection. A hub would share 10 or 100mbps among all the ports.

It still uses a router to connect to the WAN.

not that i want to be picky,
but to be technically correct, it will work as a switch, not a hub.

hub <> switch
hub != switch

as others have pointed out before

What is the avg ship time you guys have been getting? I am wanting to order but I'll be moving in a couple weeks and don't want to get stuck having this shipped to the wrong address.

I ordered on 5/23 and it shipped 5/27. I received it 6/3. In April I placed a large refurb order that took about a month to ship. I also placed and order for non-refurb parts that shipped next day. It all depends on if what you order is in stock when dealing with refurbs. I might suggest registering with them and then you can call customer service and try to change the shipping address if it doesn't ship before you move.

I have this set up at home. I just turned off DHCP on the second router (for security reasons..you don't have to do this) and plugged a line from the first router (connected to my DSL modem) into the WAN port of the second router. So it's: DSL->WAN on Router1->Switch->WAN Router2

Works fine and gives an extra layer of firewall protection.
