Where would I find the wires, exactly and how would I know when I found them?
Where would I find the wires, exactly and how would I know when I found them?

Just remove the wallplate and inspect the wiring behind it. If anything looks corroded or beaten, replace the walljack and strip some fresh copper.

Oh, originally I thought you meant to open a box outside the building or something. I don't care about doing anything to the phone jack since I am the one who had to pay to activate it and use it.

I removed the wallplate and inspected.

I noticed that I have three black wires coming out of my wall. They are completely covered in plaster at the part where they come out of the wall with plaster covering approximately 1/3 of the wires

Under the plate I have wires attaching to three screws on each side.

On the left side I have:

W (no screw is in here)

BK - This has a screw in it with a black wire attached from internally in the jack (ie: not one of black wires coming from the wall)

R - This has a screw with a red wire attached from internally in the jack. In addition, this screw also has a black wire from the wall attached to the other end of it.

On the Right side I have:

BL (no screw here)

Y - There is a yellow wire attached from internally in the jack.

G - There is a green wire attached internally in the jack in addition to one of the black wires from the wall attached to the other end of it.

So, that leaves me with 3 black wires covered in plaster from the wall, but only two of those wires are attached to anything. The third one is attached to nothing. Is it supposed to be like that?

Other than that I'm not sure how to verify if these wires are corroded or not. This stuff is way over my head. I do know that the phone technician never checked the internal wiring of this phone jack. He just plugged a tool into the jack and then did some tests with it and told me my line was fine, and then left.

Okay, you only need two wires for the phone connection.

Are any of the screw terminals loose?

If you can, try removing one wire at a time, clean the wire & terminal using either solvent (alcohol) or by scraping/sanding the copper wire. You want to the SHINEY copper. Then be sure to firmly tighten the terminal screws afterward.

That stuff in that last post is way too advanced for me. No way I'd have the wherewithal to do any of that.

I'm gonna have them replace the jack or make me a new jack elsewhere if I am sure that the jack is the problem - but how can I isolate the jack as the problem?

Don't wanna waste money on a new jack if the problem will remain the same if I get new jack.

Are there a list of specific tests I can request by name that the phone company do?

If not, presuming it's a problem with my jack or some of the phone line wiring that the phone company must fix, how do I get them to identify the problem when they couldn't do so the first time?

pinged 216.99.57.9 (if that's you Navaros) w/ 4 packets of 32 bytes of data ..received 4 Lost=00% loss average round trip time 77ms ..did that 3 times 78ms was the highest time ..this probably didn't help tho ..I'd believe that your problem is somewhere between the NID(Network Interface Device..the box outside usually) and your CO(Central Office could be down on the corner or ?) or the box the phone co. tech opens up somewhere down the road from where you live... <edit> if you're paying for residential dsl ..and not business type dsl.. most isp/phone co. only guarantee is connection( solid/shaky notwithstanding ) ..not consistently low and steady ping times <edit2 typo >

Ah ScrapSilicon I am using Kerio Personal Firewall and I blocked some stuff with it just now, that might have been your pings. I'll turn it off for now in case you wanna try again?

By the way when I do IPCONFIG right now it lists it as 216.99.56.97, maybe because I had tech support switch my Zoom modem to function as a bridge modem this morning or maybe it changes whenever I reboot, I have no idea.

Would that effect the test?

ScrapSilicon thanks a lot for your help, you seem to know a lot about this stuff.

In addition to trying to isolate this problem, I am also trying to discover if I have two problems.

My old Dlink modem can not ever contact the DHCP server or renew the IP address. My new Zoom modem always can. But the connection "works" just the same and is is screwed up with either of them.

Why is it that my Dlink modem can't contact the DHCP server and my Zoom modem from my ISP can? Does this indicate a hardware problem with my Dlink modem, or is it all part of the same one problem with my connection?

This point also confused me quite a bit and no one has explained that to me in a way I could understand it.

Is there any jargon I can use with my phone company to instruct them to perform actions? I am very willing to push them as hard as I can, but I just need to know what technical demands to make. Which as of now, I am clueless about.

Do you think they'd be mad if I linked to my threads from here on their boards? Is that a conflict of interest or are they cool with that?

I made a thread on that site as suggested and they gave me some ideas but so far as of today the problem still remains as it was in the original post.

I was finally able to borrow my friend's laptop computer for a couple of days so that I could test my connection with a "known good PC".

The speeds test I do with that or on my PC are identical. However at this particular moment my speed tests are producing normal results, albeit when I play online games the pings are still horrendous.

My friend has cable Internet. When he pinged google.com at his house with his laptop, the highest ping response he got was 9ms.

When I ping google.com with his laptop at my place using the same laptop and my 3.0 Mbps Internet connection, the lowest ping I get is 44ms.

I need to know what is a "normal" ping rate for a 3.0 Mbps ADSL phone line connection to google.com?

Also when I do traceroutes they start at around 1.257ms at the first hop and by the last hop they are always around 61.721ms. Is that "normal"? I need to know what normal traceroute results for a connection of this type should be.

I only have use of my friend's laptop for a couple of days. Can you guys please help me by telling me how to use his laptop to isolate for sure whether this is a PC issue or a phone line issue?
