Two people are dead and two others remain hospitalized after a fatal car accident on I-74.
At 8:40 on Saturday morning, a pick-up truck traveling westbound on I-74 at mile marker 124 lost control and crossed the median of the highway. The truck came in contact with a semi-trailer before hitting an eastbound school bus carrying the Tremont High School girls basketball team head-on.

Julie Allen, 27, a former standout distance runner at Corona del Mar High School, died Jan. 15 after the car she was driving sped into oncoming traffic on West Coast Highway, police said. An investigation is underway into the fatal 10-car accident that also killed two others.

"The cause of the accident is still under investigation, although McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling says weather may have been a factor".

Second may have been a crazy but the first was probably due to bad road conditions

The first one happened pretty close to where I live and really has the place shaken up. Not "crazy" by any means. Just teenage inexperience and carelessness behind the wheel.

I can see how a lot of accidents can be caused by either sleeping at the wheel, or doing things in your car other than driving.
Smoking
Texting
Reading
makeup
talking to people in back seat
Eating Frech Fries
etc.

Then a lot of intersections are poorly designed.

One of my relatives was in an accident where a car in an opposing lane jumped the median and guard rail doing a 360 in the air and lanking on top of their vehicle. Amazingly no one was killed. I think God was there that day.

Another relative about 12 years ago was in an accident with a Semi. He was in the blindspot of the SEMI and it switched into his lane and drove over part of his automobile severing his seat belt. He was impaled in the back by a round guard rail (Pipe). This was on a busy overpass going over Hwy 270

Be careful anywhere around large trucks. Assume they cant see you and drive defensively. It is easier to miss a turnoff than to turn your car over at 70 mph +/-.

Damn! I thought BMWs were supposed to be "safe". I was seriously considering a used 2008 328 two door coupe for $26500 cash. I guess Ill have to think again. :|

I think its time for a 5 day waiting period and a background check before people can buy gasoline.

All of these car wrecks are getting out of hand and have to be stopped.

Another design might have been deflected better or withstood the sheering from the tree. An SUV perhaps. Or smaller car. Or a car with more side impact protection. There are so many variables your head would spin.

I still like BMW, and I sure would not take 30mph roads at what was probably 80+ mph. So while the coupe is not completely off my list, another car might recieve more consideration - like a Mercedes E350.

I saw two cars smashed pretty badly on the freeway this morning on my drive in to work. I'd bet serious coin that the motherfucker in the rear was texting or doing something with a cell phone. Didn't look like he slowed at all before hitting the car in front of him. I wouldn't be surprised if both cars were totalled.

Yea I heard about those car show loop-holes - no background check, no waiting period,,, no nothing, just buy a car, drive it off the lot and kill someone.

This madness has to stop.

I dont think owning a car is protected by the bill of rights or the constitution?

Maybe we need to stop the sale of tires, oil, and transmission fluid?

At the very least, lets collect DNA and fingerprints from people who buy gasoline and build a national database.

DAMN!!! I'm all for a 10 gallon limit on the tank of gasoline. We don't want any of these yahoo's going off with "extended" gas tanks!

Yep. Nobody needs more than 10 gallons. Also, whats the fastest speed limit in the nation? 75? 80? Why not make all cars unable to exceed 80mph? Seems like there is no need to do more than 80.

Dont you guys read? I already blamed the driver for being an idiot. But since some cars design factors can influence outcomes, some choices are better than others. There is no arguing that. Therefore you dont have any damn idea what would happen without taking differing design and materials into account. Not to mention weight, height and materials of the car.

Personally, I think all cars need to be locked up in some kind of secure enclosure, like a car safe. Keys to the car safe need to be kept of reach of children, or else the child might get ahold of the car, and who knows what will happen then.

People that drive an automatic transmission need to apply for a special yearly permit, home inspections, background check and before the automatic transmission is taken out of the car safe, the local police department has to be notified in writing via certified letter.
