I'm in the middle of playing a new game and all of a sudden it shuts down and i'm back at my desktop. I took my overclock completly off my video card. I still have my cpu (2500+) overclocked but only to 2.03 ghz. I did some tweaking with rage 3d. Should I just reformat my computer? I keep having problems with doom. Should I reset my BIOS to all defaults, if so, how?

my initial Doom 3 installation ran perfectly with all stock settings on my hardware.

I then decided to "tweak" some things and thats when all h*ll broke loose.

needless to say everything is back to stock again and my problems are all gone.

try it...

Can you be more specific on what you tweaked? Did you fix it by formatting or reseting the bios and reformatting?

I shouldve been more specific in my first post by saying that I flashed the BIOS on my GT to the Ultra version which caused problems. I then decided to flash it back to the stock BIOS and then O/C the heck out of the video card which also caused problems.

on top of that, I decided to change the timings on my RAM which caused even more problems.

moral of my story is, dont try to tweak anything. leave all hardware at stock settings and it'll all be okay.

So basically Doom3 is the mother of all stability tests . Move over P95 and ATITool.

I dont know about that but I do know that it does put much, much, much load and stress on a system over other games like UT2K4 and such.

heck, one of my buddies can run UT2K4 and a couple of other games at one time.

but as soon as he loaded D3, he quickly realized how unstable his O/Ced P4 system was and he had to back it down some...

are you O/Cing anything? if so, put everything back to stock and see what happens.

if that doesnt help, hopefully someone else can throw ya a lifeline or two.

good luck...

I believe that all the CTD's with no warning in Doom 3 is caused by overclocking. After I clocked my barton back to stock speeds, the CTD's stopped. The same thing happened with UT2K4.

Okay, but I didn't overclock it personally, so I don't really know how to underclock it. My friend did the overclocking. Isn't there a switch on the motherboard that resets everything?

You're probably going to have to go into the bios settings ands change them back to default. There is a catagory on the main page of the bios that will load all defaults.

Are you sure thats the best way to do it? Will it corupt my operating system and I'll be forced to format, which I proabbly will anyway.

try uninstalling rage 3d. I had all kinds of problems with my 9700pro n doom3.
I never had any problems overclokin with rage3d and any other game, but it screwed me up big time in doom3 for somereason. I uninstalled rage and overcloced using omega drivers.

Good luck.

In my experience, crashes to desktop have meant <Scotty> "She needs more power, Cap'n!" </Scotty> Thermal issues = hardlock with looping sound effects.

Either decrease your clock speed to lower the power demands, or up the voltage to meet them.

So uninstalling rage3d should reverse all the changes I've made with it?

after i first installed it i had to add another .25 volts to my cpu (xp2500 OC'ed to a 3200) then doom ran fine and rock solid.

BTW i beat doom tonight! ARRRG!!
