So, the government must now name a new Czar, and create a new department, and food suppliers must add new labels. Thus driving the price of my pizza up a dollar to tell me something I already knew.
Thanks Obama!

If the person has a low calorie breakfast like a cup of oatmeal and a low calorie dinner like a grilled chicken breast with some veggies she can still be under her daily caloric maintenance which means she can still lose weight.

Eg - 1 cup oatmeal ~150 calories
- 2 slices pepperoni pizza ~ 1000 calories
- 1 grilled chicken breast ~ 150 calories
- 2 tomatoes ~ 50 calories
- TOTAL: 1350 calories

I think the public would be better served by an indication of the percentage of total daily calories the pepperoni slices takes up given a specific weight.

Eg - These two pepperoni slices account for 75% of total daily calories for a 165 pound person to maintain their current weight

This. In the last 3 months, I've changed little things in the diet. Maybe 300 calories/day. I'm down to 194 as of last night, 8lbs.

people at my gym would probably look at me funny if i brought a 6 pack
Space ghost would kick their asses.

Exactly. You burn thousands of calories simply by existing.
If by thousands, you mean at most ~2000 for a big fella like myself, then sure.
Most people seem to be too lazy to do a few hours of reading/research.

As some already mentioned, you need calories just to exist.

2 slices of pizza ain't going to make you fat if you move around throughout the day (like walking around NYC from apt. to work etc).

Now if you eat a 3/4 of a meat monster pizza and have 3 DIPA bombers on NFL Sunday, well that's a whole mountain of calories that you're most likely not going to burn off that day. You most likely added a spackle of fat...which becomes a less forgiving metabolic burn after 40 due to slowing metabolism.

Bottom line is to eat as much veggies as possible as you can eat a shit ton of it to satiate your appetite and not gain weight (as long as you don't put fattening sauces on it, lol).

Portion control is key to not gaining......unless you're an Olympic swimmer in training.

The 1st 2K are freebies so stop there.

What's killing me is that I take major swings in physical activity. I used to do either a lot of workouts or physical labor...I was buring upwards of 3500-4000 calories a day easily. (not the case now) Last summer, I was down to my college weight which was pretty much muscle + bone + 10-12% body fat. As soon as I stop the physical activity, my brain doesn't tell me to consume less calories....I still want to eat/drink the same amount of whatever...

Portion control has always been my battle when faced with various levels of activity throughout the year.

I get the point, but do these things account for baseline metabolism?

Fact is, baseline metabolism burns most of your calories. Unless you exercise for hours a day, you're not going to make much of a dent in box of Twinkies you ate for dessert. Exercise is good for you, but the truth is that losing weight means controlling intake.

Right, it's bullshit. She'd have to spend that time to burn off those calories if those calories were added to the baseline she already burned through normal activity in a given time period, and if she really cared about the amount of weight those additional calories would convert to. Unless she is exceeding her needs by the same amount every day as a matter of habit this is completely meaningless. It's the sort of pseudo-scientific pablum modern media consumers lap up, though.

And you automatically assumed our eater is a she, for good reason.

Basically, this seems to be condoning starvation diets, which are not remotely healthy.

I've been saying that for years. Snickers bar or 30 minutes on a treadmill. You pick.

It's so much easier to simply not consume the calories than it is to burn them off. Weight loss starts with your mouth, not your legs.

Yep...MyFitnessPall has really opened my eyes to how many calories I was consuming daily...and how much it takes to burn off calories.

I'm down almost 40 pounds since starting to use it in late May.

No "diet," just counting calories and making smarter choices about what I eat.

About 2500 for men, or more than that if you're grotesquely overweight.
My nutritionist said it was probably closer to 1800/day because of our sedentary lifestyles/lack of muscle. This was probably 3 years ago and I tested at 2175, resting rate. Thanks to injuries, I haven't lifted in a year and am down quite a bit of muscle....sadly.

My bro, the plumber that works his ass off, tested at 2300+ resting rate.
