More GPU power??? What for?

What games are coming out which will make you upgrade to the new GPU's?

Im sitting on a Lightning 780 SLI atm on 1440p and i dont see a game worth buying that will require any new GPU upgrades.

No new BF or Crysis, elder scrolls title...

What are we upgrade for? any ideas?

There aren't any games that need better GPU power than you already have.

BUT if you want to go to 4K then you will need to upgrade to get acceptable framerates at acceptable game settings.

There are many reasons..

1. 4k @ lower power consumption

2. VR

3. 144hz monitors= higher fps requirements

4. Full compatibility with dx12 & full driver support in future.

5. Pride of the inner devil!

6. Money to burn.

I upgraded because I was still sitting on a GTX 275. I upgraded for Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, Dirt Rally, and maybe TW3 if I ever feel like playing it. Other games I play, like KSP weren't even really taxing my old GPU. My 980 Ti feels like it's idling even with DSR on, lol.

That's really the tip of the iceberg for me, though. The most dominating reason I upgraded is that I plan to be a first adopter for VR. I'll be preordering SteamVR and Oculus as well as StarVR when they ever come to market (probably be on Pascal or later by then). Space flight sims will never have been so much fun as with VR, and they're my favorite genre next to racing.

You are sitting with 2 high end GPU's, why would you upgrade now?

People upgrade because they don't have 2 high end GPU's. They upgrade because they are using 4K resolutions.

I have more performance slightly but no problems with sli now.

OP,

I upgraded from a 970 to a 980 Ti so I could play The Witcher 3 at 2560x1600 @ 60fps. There's no way my 970 would have been able to handle it.

But 780 SLI is about the same performance as a 980 Ti, so there's probably no need for you to upgrade unless you're hitting the 3GB VRAM limit.

I don't understand this thread then. Are you complaining that you upgraded, and the games you have or want didn't need the upgrade? Why did you upgrade to begin with? If you saw the improvements you wanted on the games you have, then what are you complaining about?

I completely agree, I'm running GTX680's and see no need to upgrade at 1440p@144hz. I mean I could squeeze out a couple more fps and maybe disable gsync and turn on ULMB but honestly I don't feel it's worth $600. I figure my next upgrade will be when everyone is ditching their 980Ti's for pascal or possibly big pascal if there's a huge performance jump.

My 8 year old 1080p monitor died. Bought a new 1440p monitor. Had a gtx770 but upgraded to evga 980ti. Now happily playing gta 5, carmageddon reincarnation. Should be all set for fallout 4 now also. I haven't researched what requirements it will take but I really like the fallout series and want to run it the best that I can. With a 980ti I should be able to.

I think what the OP is referring to is people that are dumping their 980's after 6 months for 1/2 price and getting 980 ti's that they'll dump for 1/2 the price and buy the next new shiny thing effectively shelling out $300-400 a year to be at the top of the game rather than waiting for something worth while to upgrade to and hold on to it for a while. I'm running a pair of 680's that I got when they were pretty new and still pretty expensive but they've also lasted me 3 years and as long as everything goes a planned I wont need to upgrade until they're 4 years old averaging ~$200/yr. If I do something similar next year and buy $800-1000 worth of video cards and run them until I have a reason to upgrade it costs me about 1/2 what people that are dumping cards every year and right now I'd only be looking at a 30% increase in performance for $600 which just doesn't seem worth it, especially after as long as I've had these cards. Even if Pascal isn't as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be I'm sure there will be a decent lot of lightly used 980 ti's that will be 300-350 each making SLI $600-700 if it works out to be the better option, and you're looking at ~150% performance increase for the same price as a 30% increase today. If I'm wanting to push my budget even further add a couple hundred to put them on water and moderately OC them to get an extra 10-15% out of them without much work.

At the same time, without these people wanting to stay at the bleeding edge I wouldn't have a reliable second hand GPU market to save me hundreds of dollars. So ignore the OP, buy away :biggrin:

Yeah, I usually don't buy every generation. If pascal turns out to be irresistible to me (which I doubt very seriously) I will just gift or sell this 980ti to my brother so it basicly stays in the family. I don't think i've ever sold a video card online. When they get too old that I don't want them anymore I will just donate them to charity if it's still working right. I plan on trying to use this extra gtx 770 card I have now in my unraid 6 box to try running a windows vm/video passthrough.

I buy card every 6 months. Buy from US for retail price(never paid taxes) and sell the card at same price here in Brazil. Prices here are atrocious. 3x at launch and 2x down the line. So people actually thank me for selling at US retail prices. I sold my evga 980 sc acx2.0 for $3 profit last month. Now getting 980ti by gigabyte, which will hopefully be on sale when next card comes up. Why I do this? To get max fps on max (custom)settings. I have 144hz monitor and try to get over 100 fps. I never play latest games. I wait for a few patches, mods(where applicable) and then pimp the sh** out of the game..

Am I crazy?

May be a little but I don't want to play games on medium high settings at 60fps. I will buy a console for that ..

There is Battlefront, which is Battlefield-ish. Lot of people upgraded for The Witcher 3, which Kepler does not perform well in.

There are also higher resolution screens, and those of us with 144Hz displays.

BF4 at 1440p/144hz is enough reason all by itself.
