i am kind of pondering which to decide, if i should just buy extra ips for 10 buxs or go get Cable/Dsl router like the linksys Ethernet Cable/Dsl router. This situatuion is for AT&T/mediaone roadrunner service in Los Angeles and they only have 1 ip(currently). They have 2 computers and i was thinking it meant not be worth the money to buy extra ip's. I tried sygate and it works great, evertything seems to work. I got the Linksys Cable/Dsl router at frys to sample it out and it seems ok, with a little bug here and there with setups.
Sygate would be more than enough if they didnt need so much bandwidth.
I pesonally have san diego roadrunner and have had it for serveral years. In sd, they charge 5 bux for each additional ip. The way sd rr is setup is that ips are assigned to the cable modem, thus i believe based on experience that were alotted bandwidth based on cable modem. We dont have to regiser our nic mac address or anthing like that. We just ask for one additonal ip and boom its there for our use. And i think based on experience that that bandwidth usuage is limited to cable modem not ip's.
I understand that cable is dependent on how many people are using the service in my given area(node) etc... But what i am saying is that if i am download/uploading intensively and my roomate plays a online game, his pings really sucks hard. But my neighbors ping for playing the same online game on the same server is fine.
Well in LA(mediaone/At&t road runner) you have to regiser your mac address for each network card to use the cable service.
Meaning there setup is different and maybe there bandwidth is not dependent on the cable modem as the sandiego roadrunner. Basically if you want service you have to call mediaone RR and tell them your network card mac address to use there service. And your options are either u stick with 1 ip, or buy 3 for 9.99 additional. There is no option to have 2 ip.
Thus based on my experience with San diego roadrunner, having addtional ip is wothless with respect to bandwidth if the setup is similar to sd rr. But since LA is different setup maybe its differnt so i am in a deliema, on which option to choose.
Yes addtional IPs makes setup, playing games easier, but nowadays with Router/sygate all the stuff(games, icq,etc..) seem to work just fine.
Some help, and advice would be great on which to choose the Router method(sharing 1 ip) or getting additional IPS. Comments on how LA RR is setup would be cool too.
PS. Reason Sygate is not a option, eventhough sygate is kick ass program, sharing is dependent on host computer. So if host computer crashes, there goes the network. Router setup makes computers not dependent on host thus i dropped the sygate option ='(
