Maybe customer deception is a bit too harsh of a term to use, but this needs to stop.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5291/amd-quietly-releases-the-oemonly-radeon-hd-7670-turks-rides-again

5450 is getting it's third name? Brutal.
The Turks based 6570 is back as the 7570. The Caicos based 6450 is back as the 7470 and the 7450 (depending on the type of RAM used). And absurdly enough, the 2 year old Cedar based 5450 is back as the 7350. The last one is particularly notable as Cedar is from the Evergreen family, not Northern Islands. So it lacks all the features Northern Islands brought, including DisplayPort 1.2 support, improved anisotropic filtering, UVD3, MLAA, and the improved tessellation unit; all of this being on top of all of the differences between Northern Islands and Southern Islands.

HP says, "I want to buy 1 gazillion of these cards. I want them to be called HD 7670. AMD says, "NP". It's HP's customers that are being mislead. It's HP that's perpetrating the deception. AMD is just giving HP, their customer, what they want. They are allowing their name to be bastardized. That's business these days though. There's no shame and it's all about the Benjamins. Manufacturers do it all of the time. It's by no means unique to GPU's.

this only applies to PCs purchased from the lilkes of dell, HP and such.

Wanna bet these end up in retail channels?

But even if it is OEM only, so what? These are not 7K series GPU's. Dell and HP buyers shouldn't be scammed any more than retail buyers.

I don't think 76xx parts will not be sold via retail, will they? I was under the impression that 66xx/76xx is oem only. It sucks, but both nv+amd do it. It doesn't affect me so I don't put too much thought into it

Big OEM Customer: "Hey, looks like you are putting out Y series cards. Sell us the next batch of the ultra cheapos as "Y" series on the Purchase Order so we can legally list it on the spec sheets. Btw, your competitor has been making some pretty good offers lately. *wink*"

Looks like the 6670 getting a rebage ^^ (so are low end mobile gpus, from both amd and nvidia)

seriously though.... who buys a card like that anyways? right?
just HTPC people, and the 6670 does that perfectly fine as is... if they get a super cheap, 6670 rebaged in a OEM buildt pc, they probably fine with it, as long as it can play farm-vile ect.

People that want to game on a oem, pc will probably buy something with a beefier gpu in it.

It is crappy for consumers.

What we can do is inform everyone we know and direct them to the best deals.

How is it crappy for consumers who don't give a flip in the first place? You're upset but don't try to rationalize your opinion on some business practice on those of my mom who just buys a laptop and wants to play farmville and bejeweled.

Also, why are you going to waste your time trying to inform people who really don't care? I mean, really? Your gf or close family member, eh I guess. Even then though they don't give a crap and are accepting of your help because they're not going to want to tell you they don't give two shits about what really is the model number of their gpu. They'll feign interest at best. It's not some civic duty of yours to keep people from being deceived by the big bad OEMs. Learn to pick your fights.

I wouldn't call it a rebadge if it's based on 28nm.

Agreed. Does anyone buying these know/care the difference between 76xx and 66xx? All they see is the tag at best buy below the computer that says, "Great for multimedia blah blah blah". I think its crummy to re-badge but I have a hard time feeling bad for uninformed consumers. I doubt many who buy this will be disappointed in its performance anyhow. I would be furious if they rebadged high end stuff from gen to gen but again I say buyer beware.

How is this customer deception? Both companies have done this for years. Solid chip designs on tried and true manufacturing methods have the highest profit margins. If a chip is "good enough" for its application, why would a business, which is there to make money, invest any more for virtually no payoff? Having a new series does not mandate that all the chips be on a certain manufacturing process. Furthermore, the customers that are buying the OEM PC's that these products are used in (exclusively, if I may add), don't even know what a graphics card is in the first place. I'm curious how many of you complain when Honda or Ford release a new year model with the same engine as last year's? Are you emailing them up a storm?

Here's another thread put out just to complain about nothing.

On a side note, I think you can tell how awesome a product launch is going to be by the amount of fanboy rhetoric sweeping the forums in the weeks leading up to it. Hell, I might even statistically model it and call it the "fanboy QQ factor."

As long as they don't put GCN/Newer GPUs into the same family(? 1) of Cards, there shouldn't be confusion.

*1- "Family" meaning 7(x)xx, not (x)xxx.

Um, yes they are, actually. Now if the question is "should" they be 7k series, OTOH...
