alright, is there a reason i should pick one tv card over the other here:

Conexant(10bit)-based Leadtek Expert:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-122-180&depa=0

Philips(9bit)-based Compro Gold Plus:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-160-017&depa=0

now, what everyone has been telling me is that 10bit > 9bit. Okay, but what im confused is about is how come there are SO many reviews praising the compro while a lot of times review says that that the leadtek could be better picture quality?

also, will dscaler work with both these two cards? which of these 2 cards will give me the best picture quality? (with or without dscaler)

I would choose the Compro Gold Plus. This is an excellent card with many good reviews. It can power and shut down your computer according to your recording schedule. It has a Philips 7134 chipset which will give you excellent picture quality. True that the Conexant 10-bit chipset in the leatek may give you a slightly sharper picture, BUT the signal must be clean in order to achieve this. If the TV signal is not at its strongest or if the input is a VHS tape, then it will give you more noise in the pictures. You won't be disapointed with the Philips 9-bit quality.

I think watching tv with its own software is as good quality as Dscaler. The drawbacks of Dscaler is that the functions are not too rich. (ie. recording and schedule). I personally use Intervideo WinDVR and ChrisTV, which gives the same excellent picture and way more functions. I compared Dscaler to WinDVR, and I don't see significant picture differences.

More people has the Leadtek because Leadtek acards have been for sale for a LONG time, but Compro cards are relatively new. Actually Compro just started selling its own cards for less than a year. I think Compro used to make OEM products before that. Here is some info on Compro from their website:

" Compro Technology develops and markets PC graphics and multimedia products. With highly motivated and experienced engineers, innovation is the main focus at Compro. We combine the latest hardware and software technologies to provide high quality products to the rapidly evolving PC market.

Founded in 1988, Compro initially focused on the OEM business by using its engineering and manufacturing skills to produce high quality products for major OEM customers including HP, Compaq and Visiontek.

In 2001, Compro released its first self-branded product, Personal Cinema. Jointly developed with NVIDIA, Personal Cinema is a complete digital entertainment solution, providing 3D gaming; TV viewing, timeshifting, recording, and editing; and DVD playback.

In 2002, Compro launched VideoMate PC graphics products, a complete line of 3D video cards with integrated video features including TV viewing, video capture and editing, and DVD playback capabilities.

In 2003, Compro introduces VideoMate PCI TV Tuner cards and USB 2.0 TV tuner boxes. With our exclusive Power Up Scheduling and Picture Purifying technologies, Compro provides the best picture quality and greatest convenience. "

Compro is definitely not new comers in this field. The picture quality will depend on the signal strength. If the signal is very strong/clean, then the conexent 10-bit will be SLIGHTLY better, if the signal is not at its best, then then philips 9-bit card will have better picture. And i am sure the Compro Gold Plus will sound better than the Leadtek. =, and the power up/shut down feature is nice. And i am not sure if the Dscaler will work with the conexent chipset in the Leadtek.

I don't know about the compro, but I kow the leadtek software works well for recording, and scheduling is easy. It can shut down your pc when done also.

for the Conexent 10-bit, it will be a little bit noiser in the picture quality if the signal is not clean. I think the Compro Gold Plus is more practical and it's the better card overall. I read that Leadtek cards have some sound issues that it sounds like mono. I am sure you will be happy with either card, it just depends on what u are looking for.

Not sure what you are going to be using the TV card for, but if you plan on making your own Tivo box you might want to check to make sure the card you buy will be supported. I recently put together a MythTV based computer and the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250/350 is recommended because of its hardware based video decoder.
