Does having more video memory require a stronger CPU?

Someone told me a Opty 150 won't power 7950 GT KO 512MB in SLI.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this technically speaking as to why this person seems to think this?

From what I've seen so far a Opteron 150 is more then strong enough to power two 7950 GT KO 512MB cards in SLI.

If anything I thought having a stronger PSU was more an issue.

any amd athlon64 type or higher cpu will power that video card just fine. even an overclocked pentium 4 can run them alright, though not quite as fast as an amd...

i would get an sli certified brand name psu though. 500W at least is what i would recommend for sli.

The CPU has nothing to do with powering the video cards. It's all the power supply.

That said, the Opty 150 might not have enough horsepower to effectively feed those video cards. In other words, the major bottleneck in that system might be the CPU. If you overclock the snot out of it that will likely NOT be the case, but hey..

That's a pretty mean video subsystem at any rate

secretanchitman I'm running a Corsair HX520W

I tried to overclock this Opty and all it gave me was 2660, I ran it at FSB 250, Multi 10.5x Volts 1.50 & 1.52 and I can't believe even with these volts I couldn't get it to take 2.7Ghz

I wonder if lowering the Multi further then pushing up the FSB might get me into 2.7ghz.

By the way if I remember 1.52 volts should still be ok yea?

1.52 on a single core is reasonable. Think you can boost it up a bit further if you want to live dangerously (Hell, why not? It's not as if it'd cost a fortune to get an equivalent CPU now is it?).

Well, I don't know how powerful the Opty is, but with my Pentium D and 2 GB of RAM my 7950GT Superclocked performs on par with benchmarks from reviews of the card. Also, this card is a great OCer, easily pushed to 7900GTX speeds without missing a beat.

Well I pushed the Opty to 1.52 seemed like it didn't bother it. I'm not a major Pro on doing OCs so I don't know how high volts can go.

These 7950GT KO 512MB cards only got up to: 580/1570
